Weekly Tech Update 2/22 to 2/26

A Conundrum

This stretch, the stretch from Winter break to Spring break, has always presented me with a conundrum. On one hand, it is nearing the end of the Winter season and I am ready to ditch the dreary, gloomy colors of Old Man Winter for the vibrant colors and signs of life Spring has to offer. On the other hand, this stretch reminds me that we are on the downward side of the school year. Even though I think we actually have a longer stretch in school after Spring break, that stretch just seems to fly by!

I know we have had our issues this school year trying to teach in unprecedented times, but WE ARE GOING TO MAKE IT! We have to make it. We have to make it for ourselves, our families, and especially our students. The district has expressed its appreciation many times, but I would also like to thank all of you and let you know you are doing a fantastic job! Welcome back and looking forward to seeing everyone soon.

I'm sure many of you have seen this floating around on social media, but I thought it's fitting.

Many Updates Coming to Google!

Last week, Google for Education held a webinar showcasing all the updates that are coming to the Google platform for Education. John R Sowash created and shared these graphics summarizing the updates that Google is rolling out throughout the year. If you would like to read more on the updates, you can find them here: Learning With Google. I will keep a lookout for when the updates appear on our accounts and try to give you a heads up. Sorry for those of you wanting to see marking periods in Google Classroom :(. That was a major disappointment expressed by the more than 5000 attendees.

New Entrants = Update Online Sites

It is always a good idea to update those online resources that we may connect to Google Classroom. For instance, GoGuardian, EdPuzzle, and Quizizz. If you have a new entrant (or have had a student leave) in your Google Classroom, watch the tutorial below to see how you can update your rosters.

Get Stuff Done Club & InstaStrategies

The Get Stuff Done Club will hold two, one-hour zoom sessions, every Wednesday from 12 to 1 and then 1 to 2. If you can not attend at those times, the sessions will be recorded and uploaded to the Empower site. Every Wednesday will be a quick demonstration of an educational strategy from one of four popular educational books. The format of each session will be a quick demo (15 minutes or less) followed by Q & A and collaboration time.

1st Wednesday of the Month - Feel The Rush (EDrenanline Rush)

2nd Wednesday of the Month - Don't Kill the Wonder (Ditch That Textbook)

3rd Wednesday of the Month - What's the Protocol? (EDUProtocols)

4th Wednesday of the Month - What's the Play Coach? (DL Playbook)

To join the meeting this Wednesday, click HERE for the 12 o'clock session or HERE for the 1 o'clock session, or email me and I will send you the Zoom link directly. If you would like, you can register for each session below, and I will email you the link on Wednesday so that you don't have to search very far for links. See registration buttons below.

IMPORTANT: Make sure you are signed in with your district Zoom account or you will not be admitted from the waiting room. Sorry, I'd rather be safe than sorry!

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! 12 o'clock session

Who Got Caught? 🚨

Has anyone noticed the new “I Caught” option on the Empower website? If you haven’t, head on over and check it out. The “I Caught…” form is courtesy of the Cyclone Learning Zone. I’m not going to spoil it, you’ll have to check it out. Here’s the link.

Tech Tool(s) of The WEEK

Classroom Q

Classroom Q is a great way to change how students are asking questions. Students can then raise their hand to notify the teacher of a question and then submit the question to the teacher's queue. Teachers will create a class that students will join with a unique pin. And yes, it is NYS Ed Law 2D compliant! Might be worth it to check it out. Great way to engage those in a hybrid or virtual setting, especially if the student doesn't want to put their question in the public chat within Zoom.

WCSD Informational Technology Website

The Informational Technology(IT) department is establishing a ticketing system to streamline the process of tracking technology issues. The ticketing system can be found using this link. (https://sites.google.com/watertowncsd.org/informationtechnology/home). This should be a website that you bookmark in case you need to reach out to the IT department.

Would you Mind Sharing?

It seems like it's been a year, but we made it through the first 4 months! I have been fortunate to witness colleagues finding their stride and using strategies and techniques that have helped with the start of this unprecedented school year. However, there are colleagues that could use some ideas on strategies and techniques that could help in their transition to this style of hybrid/remote learning. If you are willing to share, please click on the Google Form below so we can compile some strategies that have been effective for you. Just drop a quick note in the Google Form and I will be in touch. THANK YOU!!!

Feedback Welcomed and Encouraged
