Spring Carnival - April 7th, 2017
The PTO's annual spring carnival is quickly approaching! If anyone has on old atlas or book of maps that they would be willing to let us use the pages to decorate our class booth with (you would not get them back), would you please let me know? Thank you! Also, every year each class works together to donate an item to the Silent Auction. This year, Kindergarten is going to put together a "Rainy Day" basket filled with different activities to be used on a rainy day. Some items might include simple card games, cupcake mix and liners, classic board games such as "Hi Ho Cherry Oh" or "Candy Land", puzzles, etc. If you are willing to buy and donate an item or give money to put towards an item for our basket, please contact me. I will also be asking each family to sign up to work our booth for a portion of the evening (sign up sheet to come). This is a great event that our PTO puts on for us and a perfect opportunity to give back to them as a "thank you" for all that they do for us and our students here at HPS!
Reading/Daily 5
The Kindergarteners worked hard this week learning to identify the vowel sound in various words and decided whether it was the "long" or "short" sound. As we always do, we continued to review all of the sight words that we have learned so far this year. We are going to start accelerating the speed of which we get through the alphabet in our handwriting, so you will be seeing more letter sheets coming home with your student. Are reading groups were put on hold this week so that I could assess student in preparation for report cards coming home next Wednesday, March 15. With the shorter week, I am going to send binders home next Wednesday to ensure report cards get home safely. You will then return them on Thursday. We will continue with our regular binder the following week.
Math
This week's math lessons wrapped up our section on subtraction. The students enjoyed a math related art project where each student created a leprechaun and wrote an addition sentence to fit the writing prompt "My leprechaun had ___ gold coins. I gave him ___ more gold coins. He has ___ gold coins in all." See pictures of the proud artists below!
Social Studies
We discussed how everyone's family is different as well as alike in many ways. The students enjoyed talking about culture and learning that it consists of religion, holidays that are celebrated, language that is spoken, food, and clothing. It was fun to hear about the students' heritage and traditions that they carry on in their own families.
We practiced writing addition sentences during a leprechaun art project. Check them out below!
