Great Things Going On In Third Grade

We hope everyone has a wonderful holiday break with your family. There is no homework during the break. We recommend that all students continue to read and practice their multiplication facts. We have attached a reading log and a fun scavenger hunt for any child that is interested in completing over the break!

Because of Winn-Dixie

When we return from winter break, we will begin a third grade novel study over the wonderful book Because of Winn-Dixie. We are highly encouraging each child to have their own copy of the book Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo. This will help your child build complex sight word vocabulary, and enable them to go back into the text to promote higher level thinking. Each child should bring their copy of the book to school on Tuesday, January 5th. Please contact your child's teacher if you need assistance obtaining a copy of the book.

Multiplication Facts

Over the holidays, we highly recommend that students continue to practice their multiplication facts. At this point in the year, all students should be finished, or nearing completion of mastering multiplication facts (0 - 12). We will be wrapping up our study of multiplication and division and moving on to other math concepts. We will be begin going deeper to solve complex, multi-step word problems. Word problems are always challenging for students. Students that do not have their facts, are really put at a disadvantage in math, when trying to solve word problems. We hate to see students struggle because they do not know their facts, and are able to solve a word problem because they are stuck trying to figure out what 5 X 3 equals. Please give your child the gift of spending time with them to help them learn their facts! There are lots of great ways to help a child succeed with math facts. We highly recommend you play games with your child over the holidays, such as SKUNK or Multiplication War! It is a great way to spend quality family time, while helping your child build their math knowledge. If your child is struggling with learning their facts, please contact your child's teacher. She will be happy to help provide you with materials, or ideas to help!

Please mark your calendars to join us on Friday, December 18th, for Holiday Live at 8:30am, and our annual winter class parties at 1:45pm.
