Essential Question: What is Discovery?
During our Discovery Unit we are reading two books about India and Mexico. One fiction and one nonfiction for each country. Last week, we discovered many interesting facts about India. We even took a virtual trip to the Taj Mahal using our VR goggles. The students LOVED the activity! This week, we read Dear Primo. It is the story of two cousins, one in America and one in Mexico, and how their daily lives are different yet similar. Dear Primo is scattered with Spanish words. We needed to use context and picture clues to figure out each Spanish word.
Reading
Reading Workshop
During reading workshop we added some new ways to help us become stronger readers!
Math Workshop
We completed our 2D and 3D shape unit. Continue to have your child find these shapes in the real world! Our shapes museums were a big hit. Thank you for sending in all the shapes used to create our galleries! This week we focused on Counting and Cardinality. We worked on finding the number that is one more and one less as well as continued with number writing. Next week we will start our Comparing Numbers unit.
Writing
Our current unit is Opinion and Persuasive writing. Students state their opinion and give a reason for the opinion or find a problem and offer an opinion on how to fix the problem. Check out some of our great student writing.
Valentine's Day
On Friday, February 14th, we will be having a Friendship party!
With this special day just a few weeks away, we are asking you and your child to create a Valentine mailbox at home. A shoe box with a removable lid would be perfect, but any flat-bottomed container approximately that size would be fine.
You are welcome to decorate the mailbox any way you and your child wish. Please cut a 2” X 6” opening in the lid so that valentines can be dropped inside. The children will be taking out and looking at their valentines at school. If your child’s valentine mailbox does not have a removable lid, he/she will need to reach inside to take out the valentines; please be sure the opening is large enough for your child’s hand.
Please send the mailbox and valentines to school on
Wednesday, Feb. 12th.
Sometime soon, your child will be bringing home a list of classmates' names to use when addressing Valentine cards.
Enjoy this activity with your child, and as always, thank you for your cooperation! If you have any questions, please be sure to contact us.
