Dallas ISD offers vaccine for ages 5 to 11, mask protocol remains
Dallas County recently lowered the COVID-19 risk level from red to orange as cases continue to decrease in our area. This week, the FDA released an approved vaccine available for children ages 5 to 11.
The district is partnering with various organizations to operate a series of vaccine clinics at various elementary schools, set to begin later this month.
Once students are fully vaccinated, there is a 6- to 8-week period before immunity is achieved. We understand the approaching holiday season is one of the highest transmission periods for virus spread.
As such, we are excited to offer a series of COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics for ages 5 and up on a rotating basis this school year.
The following eight clinics will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, Nov. 20, for the first dose, and Saturday, Dec. 11, for the second dose:
- David G. Burnet Elementary School, 3200 Kinkaid Drive, Dallas, TX 75220
- Cedar Crest Elementary School, 2020 Mouser St., Dallas, TX 75203
- Gilbert Cuellar Sr. Elementary School, 337 Pleasant Vista Drive, Dallas, TX 75217
- Jerry R. Junkins Elementary School, 2808 Running Duke Drive, Carrollton, TX 75006
- Umphrey Lee Elementary School, 7808 Racine Drive, Dallas, TX 75232
- Henry W. Longfellow Career Exploration Academy, 5314 Boaz St., Dallas, TX 75209
- Charles Rice Learning Center, 2425 Pine St., Dallas, TX 75215
- Solar Preparatory School for Girls, 2617 N Henderson Ave., Dallas, TX 75206
Mask protocol remains
Data shows our mask requirement has helped keep the percentage of positive cases down, and Dallas ISD is one of the districts with the lowest transmission rates compared to districts without one. For now, we will continue the mask protocol for students, staff, and visitors inside facilities. However, the district will continue to monitor data and reassess in mid-December.
The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority, and we will continue working closely with Dallas County Health and Human Services to reassess should the threat level continue to decrease or rise again.
- David G. Burnet Elementary School, 3200 Kinkaid Drive, Dallas, TX 75220
- Cedar Crest Elementary School, 2020 Mouser St., Dallas, TX 75203
- Gilbert Cuellar Sr. Elementary School, 337 Pleasant Vista Drive, Dallas, TX 75217
- Jerry R. Junkins Elementary School, 2808 Running Duke Drive, Carrollton, TX 75006
- Umphrey Lee Elementary School, 7808 Racine Drive, Dallas, TX 75232
- Henry W. Longfellow Career Exploration Academy, 5314 Boaz St., Dallas, TX 75209
- Charles Rice Learning Center, 2425 Pine St., Dallas, TX 75215
- Solar Preparatory School for Girls, 2617 N Henderson Ave., Dallas, TX 75206

Anti-Bullying Week
We will be observing Bully Prevention Week at Reilly Elementary School the week of November 15 - 19. The students will be doing different activities focusing on how to recognize bullying, how to refuse to be bullied, how to report bullying, as well as other related information.
Bullying happens when someone keeps hurting, frightening, threatening, or leaving someone out on purpose. Bullying is deliberate, repeated over time and a situation in which one person has more power than the other. Bullying can be done with words, with technology such as cell phones or computers and it can also be physical.
Remember, having a conflict or problem with someone isn’t necessarily bullying. Bullying is on purpose, repeated over time and a situation in which one person has more power than the other. We all mess up now and then. If someone makes you feel bad in some way, tell them and ask them to stop. If they stop, it’s not bullying. If they keep doing it or keep finding different ways to make you feel bad, it is BULLYING!”
Anti-Bullying Week Activities
Monday – “Hats Off to Bullying” wear caps or hats of any kind with school uniform.
Tuesday – “Bullying Makes Us Crazy” Wear crazy socks with school uniform.
Wednesday – “Team Up Against Bullying” wear favorite sports team jersey or T-shirt with uniform bottom.
Thursday – “Give Bullying the Boot” wear boots with school uniform.
Friday – “Blue Shirt Day” wear blue shirt to show peace, solidarity.
The Basics of Bullying - What Parents Need to Know
As children move through elementary school, their peer relationships take on greater influence and they begin to congregate in areas where adults may not always be present (in the bathroom), or where they can be easily hidden from view (in the playground). The physical bullying that was common in the preschool years may turn more into social bullying and exclusion, which is harder for adults to see and often, harder for kids to talk about.
Bullying behavior may include: name-calling, pushing, giggling or making faces when another child talks, excluding a child from a game, ignoring a child, tattling to get a child in trouble, using a child’s name as an insult, making a point not to sit or line up near a certain child, or writing negative messages on the internet.
What Parents Can Do to Help
Bullying is a serious issue for today’s youth and one that requires adult intervention. While parents cannot protect their children from every danger that life may present, there are several things they can do to foster the proper skills needed to create and maintain healthy relationships and stop the violence of bullying.
- Stop, Listen and Stand Up! One of the single most effective things a child can do to stop the violence of bullying is to tell an adult
- Teach Your Child to Be Assertive – Not Aggressive Research shows that using aggression to deal with aggression usually makes the problem worse.
- Change the Dynamics Parents need to be aware of the dynamics in children’s peer groups. It is extremely important that parents provide an environment that promotes positive friendships and reduces negative interactions; parents need to ensure all children are included and that bullying behavior does not flourish.
- Build on Children’s Strengths Children who are bullied often have low self-esteem. Find activities they enjoy so they can start to feel good about themselves. Did you know? According to one of the world’s leading researchers on bullying, 60% of boys who bully others in elementary school had criminal records by age 24.
Dollar Jean Day
Dollar Jean Day is back! Students who want to participate will bring $1 on Thursday, November 18th to wear jeans on Friday, November 19th. If the student pays on Friday the cost is $2.

SCHOOL HOURS - 7:45 a.m. - 3:15 p.m.
MORNING ARRIVAL - 7:15 a.m. - 7:45 a.m.
BREAKFAST
We need your help to ensure that we have a safe, smooth, and respectful arrival!
All students will enter through the main entrance on Lippitt. Morning drop off begins at 7:15 a.m. School starts at 7:45 a.m. We recommend that you drop off your child no later than 7:40 a.m. Students are expected to be in class and ready for instruction at 7:45 a.m.
Arrival Reminders
Drop Off Zones
Lippitt - The lane closest to the school is a moving lane. Parents are not permitted to exit their cars in this lane. This includes opening the door for your student. If your student needs assistance, please enter through the driveway lane, or park on the other side of the street and walk them across.
Lippitt - The lane across the street from the school is for parents who want to park and walk their student to the drop off zone. Do not block driveways (this includes partially blocking driveways).
Driveway - Parents are not permitted to exit their cars in this lane. Staff are on hand to assist students who need assistance in getting out of the car. Students may also exit with out assistance if there is not a staff member in the immediate vicinity.
NEW PROCEDURE: There have been many instances of parents walking their students across the street in front of moving vehicles. This creates an unsafe environment for our staff, parents, and students. Effective Tuesday, September 7th, all parents who park and walk their students across the street are required to walk down to the designated crossing zone (look for orange cones across from the main entrance). Parents will wait at the location until staff direct them to walk across the street.
1. Lippitt and Sunland are one-way streets before and after school.
2. Do not block driveways or alleys.
3. Please adhere to directions given by campus personnel on duty.
4. Follow all directions on the Arrival Map.
5. Parents will not be allowed to walk their child to the main entrance. Parents will have to remain behind the designated blue line.
6. While on district property (this includes dropping off a student at the entrance, and picking up after school), visitors must have their masks on.
7. Be respectful to our staff and other parents.
LUNCH
Lunch is provided at no cost to all students. Due to current safety guidelines in place, we are unable to accommodate parents on campus during lunch at this time. If there are any changes during the year, we will send out communication.
School Lunches Impacted by Supply Chain Shortages
Food and Child Nutrition Services is working tirelessly to procure foods, paper goods and other needed supplies. Students will always have meals to eat, although what is served on a given day may not precisely match our printed/planned menus.
Thank you in advance for your continued support, and for your patience and understanding as we navigate these challenging limes.
DISMISSAL - 3:15 p.m.
We need your help to ensure that we have a safe, smooth, and respectful dismissal!
We want to ensure a safe afternoon dismissal for our students, parents, and staff. It is a collective responsibility between staff and parents to ensure a safe dismissal.
Dismissal is at 3:15 p.m. each day. Please ensure your child is picked up no later than 3:20 p.m. If you are late, your child will be taken to the main entrance for pick up. The dismissal locations are as follows:
- Pre-K students and Ms. Settimi's Kindergarten class will be dismissed at the exterior door of their individual classrooms located on the Sunland side (first wing) of the building.
- Kindergarten students (except Ms. Settimi) will be dismissed at the exterior entrance on Sunland (first wing).
- 1st and 2nd Grade students will be dismissed at the exterior door on Sunland (second wing). Parents will line up based on the grade level. Parents will display the student name card.
- 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade students will be dismissed on the Neering side of the building. NEW PROCEDURE: Parents will only line up on the lane closest to the school. Although Neering is a two way street, we will operate dismissal as if it was a one way street. There will be no loading across from the school. When students see their parents car, they will be sent to the loading zone (near the staff parking lot entrance). Students will load, and cars will move up in the line.
3rd-5th Grade Dismissal - There have been multiple instances of parents crossing Neering in front of moving vehicles. Please note that the crosswalks are located at Lippit and Neering and Flamingo and Neering. There is not a cross walk by the dismissal gate. We highly encourage 3rd-5th grade parents to utilize the pick up lane closest to the school, or utilize the crosswalks noted above.
Intersection of Flamingo/Sunland (Near Field) - We have many families that utilize the crosswalks at Flamingo and Sunland. There are no stop signs on Sunland. Please be mindful of families that are utilizing those crosswalks.
Dismissal Reminders
1. Lippitt and Sunland are one-way streets before and after school.
2. For safety and traffic flow, please utilize the cross walks when crossing.
3. Students cannot be picked up, or dropped off in the middle of the street.
4. To prevent traffic from backing up, please do not stop in the middle of the street unless staff, parents, and students are in the crosswalk.
5. Do not block driveways or alleys.
6. Please adhere to directions given by campus personnel on duty.
7. If you are unable to find a parking space, please make one round around the school.
8. For the safety of all, we encourage you not to bring animals on campus during dismissal. If you do, you need to maintain control of your animal and keep your distances from other families and staff.
9. Follow all directions on the Dismissal Map.
10. Parents will need to remain behind the designated blue lines during dismissal.
11. While on district property (this includes dropping off a student at the entrance, and picking up after school), visitors must have their masks on.
12. Be respectful to our staff and other parents!
ATTENDANCE
The academic success of every student enrolled in Dallas Independent School District is important. Daily school attendance and on-time arrival are critical to this success. By attending school each day, students receive the benefit of teacher-led instruction, peer discussion, building each day’s learning on the previous day’s instruction, participation in a variety of school activities and the opportunity to grow as individuals.
Every year, Dallas ISD asks parents to complete an official attendance notification and truancy pledge. Previously this form has been provided by the campus but, this year, parents can complete this form online. Please click here to complete the required form.
Parents/Guardians can monitor student attendance records via Parent Portal on an ongoing basis.
Did You Know?
Students are more likely to be involved in class, be successful, and stay on track for graduation if they miss fewer than 10 school days.- Starting in kindergarten, too many absences can cause a student to fall behind in school.
- By 6th grade, amount of absences is one of the three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
- Missing 10%, or about 18 days, of the school year can drastically affect academic success. It may also jeopardize promotion to the next grade level and receiving class credit.
- Students can be chronically absent even if they only miss a day or two of school every few weeks.
Dallas ISD requires a written explanation or note to excuse an absence. It is recommended that students turn in absence notes within three days after returning to school. However, notes may be accepted within the semester in which the absence occurred.
