Illinois Science Assessment (ISA) Next Wednesday for 5th Grade
Attendance
We also know that there has been a recent increase in child sickness, especially the flu, over the last few weeks around Lake County. In response to this, our maintenance crew has done extra cleaning in our classrooms to prevent any spread of germs.
Our goal is to be proactive and reduce the number of students considered chronically absent. This is now a factor when determining our score on the Illinois State Report Card. In Illinois, chronic absence is defined as missing 10 percent of a school year for any reason, including suspensions, unexcused and excused absences. This includes vacations and sick days. Last year, 9% of our student population was considered under this category and we want to reduce that number the best we can. We know you realize regular attendance is a necessary factor in achieving success. Work missed can never be made up in a completely satisfactory manner because the value of class activities is missed forever.
Below is some information on attendance from Attendance Works
Kids Heart Challenge
This year’s Kids Heart Challenge is just over a week away! We have a lofty goal of raising $15,000 for the American Heart Association. In the past we have raised between $15,000-$20,000. A week into our fundraiser we have raised just over $2,000. There is still plenty of time to join our team either with the fundraising envelopes that were sent home last week or by joining online at http://american.heart.org/kidsheartchallenge/ . You can also download the Kids Heart Challenge app on your mobile device. Our kids are working hard and preparing our event by practicing their jump roping skills and learning about how to keep their hearts healthy! We can’t wait to celebrate our hard work and the money that we raise! Money and donations are due by Monday, March 18th. Thank you for your support and if you have any questions please let us know!

Illinois Assessment of Readiness
Illinois is renaming the state assessment to Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR). The format and questions will be very similar to its predecessor, PARCC. It will continue to assess skills in Literacy and Math for students in grades 3-8. Students will take the assessment on their iPads within their classrooms. One new feature is less testing. Students will now do 3 math assessments (down from 4) and 2 literacy assessments (down from 3). Yet, the state is requiring our students to participate in a field test for recently developed ELA passages and items. The purpose of the field test is to try out new material and to replenish and expand the item pool for future operational tests. Therefore, students will take 3 ELA assessments.
Students will be testing the week of April 8th. Students who are not in school during testing sessions will need to make- up those assessments on a later date, which would involve students being taken out of the classroom. Therefore, please do your best to arrange appointments outside the testing week. We want to make sure the state assessment makes as little an impact as possible for our students.
Kindergarten Readiness
Kindergarten Registration Night
If you have a child who will turn five years old on or before September 1, 2019, please take note of the following information. Millburn District will be accepting registration for kindergarten on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Millburn Elementary School, 18550 Millburn Road, Wadsworth. ALL registrations will be accepted at Millburn Elementary School. You must call the school to request a registration packet. Millburn Elementary's main office phone number is 847-356-8331. Before the registration date, all the necessary paperwork should be completed and brought with you to begin the registration process. If you are unable to attend the registration date, you may drop off the completed packet prior to April 3. However, you will have to call Millburn Elementary's main office after that date for the next available August screening appointment.
What else should parents bring to registration?
1) Your child's original birth certificate - the one from the county of birth, not the hospital one - we will make a copy, no charge.
2) Registration fees will be collected at this time. Cash or check made payable to "Millburn District" is acceptable.
3) Proof of Residency (The registration packet will contain a form with a list of required documentation).
4) Your calendar - you will be able to make an appointment for the August screening process.
