Rykers' Ridge Learning Commons
Creativity, Curiosity, Innovation
September 2018
Can you believe that September is over already?! It feels like it was the fastest month yet! Here's what happened in the wonderful world of the Learning Commons. We've been exploring the importance of a growth mindset, talking about Digital Citizenship, and celebrating Dot Day.
Thank you,
Mrs. Stevenson and Ms. Schmitt
Growth Mindset!
This month, students learned about the concept of mindset and how the two types, growth and fixed, differ. We read the book Your Fantastic Elastic Brain, by JoAnn Deak and discussed how remarkable the brain is and how it can grow and strengthen in response to challenges. Students used Seesaw to respond to a time they made a mistake and how they learned from it.
Be Internet Awesome!
The Internet is a wonderful tool, but it also comes with its fair share of risks. We have to model appropriate use and digital citizenship. This month students have been working on Digital Citizenship. We used Google's Be Internet Awesome. This year Pear Deck has partnered with Google Edu to create custom, interactive presentations to accompany the Be Internet Awesome curriculum.
The kids LOVE them.
The infographic below shows the activity taking place on various platforms in a 60 second span. This is the world in which we live and where our young people hang out. It's so important that we model and help our students learn about Internet safety.
Dot Day 2018
Is there a better way to celebrate Dot Day than with Breakout EDU?! We don't think so!
Out 3rd & 4th graders did a Dot Day Breakout EDU designed by Peter H. Reynolds. These puzzles included creative thinking using patterns, size, shape, and color. They had to solve the puzzles to open locks on a box to get to their dot papers to design.
Check out the video below.
Until next time...

- Provide spaces to work collaboratively, think critically and creatively.
Also, to transition to a place where students DO stuff, not simply a place where students GET stuff.
