West Middleton Update
~Building a Compassionate, Collaborative Community For All~
A few quick updates from Mrs. Krych
We had an amazing first week of school. It was so great to see all of our students' smiling faces. We taught a lot of behavioral expectations this week, including specific teaching by our Playground and Cafeteria Teachers in those locations. One of our guiding principals at West Middleton is that ALL adults are teachers. We refer to the staff working in the cafeteria and on the playground as our Cafeteria Teachers and our Playground or Recess Teachers.
It will help to reinforce this if you use similar language at home. Language is a powerful tool for shaping school culture and one of our goals this year is to focus on our use of intentional language. We will be sharing more about this in future newsletters. I will be sending out a longer newsletter later in September, but I wanted to share a few quick updates and reminders after our first week back.
Breakfast and Recess in the Morning
We have a new arrival process for students. When students arrive at school, whether by bus or car, they will only enter the building if they are eating breakfast. This is a change from previous years where all students entered the building. If your child has already eaten breakfast, they will walk down the sidewalk towards the garage and cones. They will turn left down the driveway and once they pass the fenced in garbage bins, they can start running and playing.
We had school staff enter all buses this week and specifically teach and model these expectations. We worked with Kindergarten students separately Tuesday through Thursday and they joined the rest of the students on Friday.
If you are dropping your child off at school and they arrive at 7:39 or later, they will enter the building directly and not go to recess. Our bell rings at 7:40 and students come in from recess and the cafeteria at this time. Please do not drop your child off until 7:25. Supervision begins at this time.
Drop Off/Pick Up Procedures
If you are dropping off or picking up your child, you must remain in your vehicle at all times. You can drop off/pick up on the left side of the bus lane. Please pull up as far as possible next to the island sidewalk that separates the bus lane from the car lane. Students will use the cross walk and the island sidewalk. Students should never leave or enter cars from any other place in the parking lot.
During drop off and pick up, we have a long line of cars waiting. If you need a few extra minutes to help your child with their backpack or supplies, or you need a few extra hugs, please use one of the parking stalls and walk your child to the cross walk. We need to be as efficient as possible in order to avoid a back up onto Mineral Point Road.
Thank you for everyone's efforts to keep our Wolverines safe!!
