From the desk of our Proud Principal

Dear Bunker Hill Families,

I would like to thank you for your support with our growing number of students and staff over the summer. We grew by 3 classrooms since last school year! We are so excited to have the opportunity to get to teach even more Bunker Hill Bulldogs. If you have been in the building then you have noticed some of the rearrangements of classrooms and some newly designed areas. We are dedicated to making Bunker Hill the best elementary school for our students!

Our theme this year is We Are Family...All my Bulldogs and Me. We are having a great time getting to know each child and making meaningful connections in our school. Your children are amazing and we thank you for sharing them with us each day.

Stay current and follow us on Facebook – Bunker Hill Elementary School. We love to share what is going on in our school! We are so very proud to be leading this generation of Bunker Hill Bulldogs.

Wishing you well,

Dr. Heather Finn

Mrs. Pickett's Counselor Corner

At Bunker Hill, we strive to promote a culture of caring and support for all of our students, staff, and families. Bullying has no place at Bunker Hill. Students are educated on what bullying is and ways to respond if they feel they are being bullied or if they suspect a classmate is being bullied. Mrs. Pickett has met with every class this school year and discussed what bullying is and what we do if we are being bullied or witness bullying.

Bullying is when a person or group repeatedly tries to hurt (physically or emotionally) or control another person.

Students can report any bullying concerns to their classroom teacher, Mrs. Pickett, Dr. Pettet, or any other staff member. Additionally, the “Bully Buster Box” is located in the front office and may be utilized for reporting purposes. All reports of bullying are taken seriously and are investigated.

Bullying at Bunker Hill comes with consequence. When bullying is found to be taking place, students must read, sign, and discuss the bullying contract. The bullying contract has a leveled discipline plan.

Front Office Information

Please review a few important front office policies.

  • Morning student drop off must be done in the car rider line. Drop off opens at 8:35 am in the car rider line.
  • Students arriving after 8:50 am must be signed in at the front office.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm. Teachers need time to make arrangements.
  • Attendance- Please review the Franklin Township policies and procedures for absences on p. 2-3 in the student handbook. We appreciate your cooperation.
  • All visitors must have a photo ID to enter the building.

Car Rider Reminder

Car Rider Participants:

Safety is our main focus in our car rider line. Please remember to have your child exit/enter the driver's side of your vehicle during drop off/pick up. If you have to use the passenger's side, a staff member must accompany your child to the sidewalk. A student cannot exit the passenger side of a vehicle without staff assistance.

We appreciate your patience when dropping off and picking up your child. This ensures the safety of all our students and staff.

Please share this safety information with anyone that may pick up or drop off your student.

School Bus Evacuation Drills

Dear Parents/Guardians of Franklin Township,

To ensure the safety of all students, our school bus drivers will be discussing school bus safety and performing the Indiana DOE Required Evacuation Training with our students. Below you will find the schedule for these trainings separated by individual schools.

*Mon., Sept. 10 FC 3:00 pm

Tues., Sept. 11 MSE 2:15 pm

Wed., Sept. 12 MSW 1:40 pm

Thurs., Sept. 13 AC 8:40 am

Fri., Sept. 14 AD 8:40 am

Mon., Sept. 17 ARL 8:40 am

Tues., Sept. 18 BH 8:40 am

Wed., Sept. 19 K 8:40 am

Thurs., Sept. 20 SC 8:40 am

Fri., Sept. 21 TC 8:40 am

It is our goal to prepare your student and our staff members for the unexpected need to safely evacuate a school bus in an emergency situation. The need for this action would only take place if the students were in immediate danger. Each year we practice different scenarios to help us be ready for the unexpected emergency. Please help our efforts by speaking with your child and preparing them for our drill. Students will be instructed to leave any carry-on items in their assigned seat. Please help us the day of the drill by having them wear sensible clothing as they may be instructed to slide down and slide out the rear door while being assisted. They will be required to stand outside for a short period of time. This practice exercise will be handled professionally with the same attention to safety as a school fire drill.

We appreciate your support in this training exercise. Thank you!

Also the following bus rules are posted on the bus. Please review them with your child. Thank you!

*No food or drink on the bus.

*Wear seatbelts, if equipped

*Electronic devices cannot interfere with the safety of the driver and students

*Keep all body parts inside the bus. Windows can be down ¼ of the total window

*Stay in your assigned seats at all times

*No weapons or inappropriate items

*Only Franklin Township staff and students on the bus

*No physical or verbal mistreatment

*Carry-on items must be kept away from emergency exits and out of the aisle

Don't forget to check our LOST and FOUND for any lost items. It is located at the end of our 5th grade hallway. Any items left at the end of each month will be donated.

Each month we will send out a newsletter with important information, dates, and reminders. This newsletter will be sent electronically to the email we have on file for each student. The newsletter will also be available on our Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bunker-Hill-Elementary-School/172442352820782

Friendly Reminders

  • We do our best to keep classroom disruptions to a minimum. If your child forgets an item and you bring it in, please do not be offended if the front office asks for you to leave the item with them so it can be delivered at an appropriate time.
  • If there is a change in transportation for students at the end of the day, we must be notified by a Parent/Guardian before 3:00pm.
  • If electronics (cell phones, ipods, gaming systems) are brought into school and removed from backpacks, they will be confiscated by the teacher. A parent/guardian will be asked to pick up the electronic at the front desk.
  • When having lunch with your student in the cafeteria please remember to only have your child sit with you at the family table. We like to keep the table open for other families.
  • When visiting your child for lunch, please go directly to the cafeteria and exit the building when lunch is finished. We are no longer allowing parents to go to recess with the class. We appreciate your cooperation in helping limit our classroom distractions.

Clinic Reminders

  • Students still needing immunizations will need them completed by October 24. Please contact Mrs. Knox if you have any questions.
  • The clinic is in need of pants, especially in sizes 4-8. Please send those in to school if you are able to donate. Thank you!
  • If your child is vomiting, experiencing diarrhea, or has a fever they must be free of these symptoms for 24 hours before returning to school.
  • All medications, including cough drops, must be brought in and picked up by a parent or guardian to school. Please do not send medications to school with your student.
  • Franklin Township Community School Corporation Health Services now has a Facebook page. Make sure to Like their page here.

Thank you to everyone who has sent in Box Tops and toner cartridges. Both programs earn us money for the PTO and allow us to provide extra funds for our school. Continue to send in Box Tops every Friday. If you are available to volunteer to collect Box Tops any Friday throughout the year, please visit: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090E4AA8A72BA5FA7-boxtop1

Our Walk-a-Thon fundraising is underway! All students should have brought home a fundraising envelope last week with information on receiving donations and a list of potential prizes! I'm sure your child will be talking about the Bunker Hill fidget spinner on the prize sheet! Make sure to ask family and friends to sponsor your child with a one-time donation (we do not track laps during the walk - we just encourage the students to do their best and have fun!). We do not want students going door-to-door for the fundraiser. Ask friends and family to contribute to our walk and let them know 100% of their donation goes to the school. All parents and family members are welcome to come and walk with their student during their related arts times.

The walk-a-thon does not happen without the time and dedication of our wonderful volunteers. If you are able to volunteer at all during the day, please visit the sign-up and volunteer for a time that works for you. Thank you in advance for your help in making our 5th walk-a-thon a success!
