Principal’s Message - June 4th, 2021
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
This is our last Stinging News of the school year!!! I hope that the information we have provided has helped in all facets of raising and educating your children. It is remarkable how this is already the last week of school. As I reflect back, I know we have had an awesome year. I do have to admit it has been our most challenging year ever by holding in person learning in the middle of a Pandemic. As you know, our staff rose to the occasion and have done a magnificent job keeping your children safe all year long!
Along with reminiscing, we are always looking towards the future. Academically, Hornung students continue to be very successful in all areas of the curriculum. Many thanks to our devoted staff who work so hard every day to support your children, both academically and emotionally. This year we have continued to incorporate the “Loving Guidance” philosophy. This endeavor involved staff members partaking in Professional Development that focused on “Conscious Discipline”, which has been superb! We also held our first parent workshop on this topic and are planning more in the upcoming school year to enlighten you of this exceptional way of supporting children.
Hornung has sponsored several community service projects that included “Pink Week”, Gleaners Food Drive, “Fund a Life” and the “I Will Right Now” Foundation. Hornung is also community minded and has formed an excellent partnership with Brighton Ford and Northridge Church.
I am thrilled with our Outdoor Education Area, which features the Legacy Walkway with engraved family bricks, along with our pond and waterfall! I truly want to thank the families and staff members who have adopted gardens around our building.…incredible stuff!!!
We couldn’t have asked for a better PTO! The involvement, along with all of the time and effort that has been put into every event has been astonishing. Many, many thanks to PTO President Deanne Ferrell, Vice President Jami Kilduff, Treasurer Karen Nicholson, along with Secretary Bill Rockwell for their commitment and dedication to our school.
Lastly, I would like to thank all of you for another extraordinary school year. The overwhelming positive and encouraging words from our parents have been inspiring! In addition, I am truly blessed to be in the position of supporting such outstanding, kind, and thoughtful children. And…I need to thank our entire staff who are so talented, caring, and whose dedication to helping children is unmatched.
HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER VACATION!!!
Sincerely, Jack Yates

Counselor Corner
Well, we made it to the final stretch of the year! The last month, when the sun is shining and energy is high! And after so many months of hurdles and challenges, it is time to celebrate all that we accomplished and overcame during this school year. From masks and cohort bubbles to virtual lessons and synchronous learning, we have done it all in a year like no other. The Elementary Counselors would like to take time this month to celebrate our students and highlight their amazing strengths with a Social-Emotional lesson centered around self-concept. We plan to take time with classrooms to reflect on what we CAN DO, what we DO WELL, and what makes us UNIQUE. We want to end this year on a positive note and recognize how truly resilient our students are, and we hope that you take some time at home to do this as well. Thank you for the amazing support from our staff and parents as we worked to connect with and support all of our students this year. We are already working towards our plans for next school year and look forward to expanding our avenues of support. Lets Connect: If you are noticing some behaviors that are interfering with your child’s success in the classroom, please feel free to complete my parent referral form and we can work together to determine if supports are needed here at school. More Resources: We also have our BAS Elementary Counseling website for ideas and resources to be used at home! The McKinney Vento Act
The Brighton Area Schools is part of a consortium to serve students in temporary living situations that provides financial support for educational needs, referral for housing, clothing and other needs, general support and technical assistance. To ensure compliance with federal law, all school staff must help identify student living in the following situations: emergency shelters/transitional housing, motels/hotels, car, parks or public spaces, shared housing due to a loss of housing or economic hardship, or living temporarily with non-parent or guardian.
The district’s homeless liaison is Starr Acromite and each building has trained staff members to assist in the endeavor. Our consortium contact at the Livingston Educational Service Agency is Candice Uyttendaele.
Please contact your building principal or Starr Acromite at 810-299-4040 for information/assistance.
Important Reminder
Reminder that students should not be playing on the playground before school starts. We have no adult supervision before school on the playground so it is not safe.
Also, only Hornung students can be on the playground during school hours up until Friendship Center dismissal at 5:30 pm.
