1790s- 1820s
Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were the leaders of the Republican Party. They believed in a modest central government, limited commercial activity, and strong farming communities. Republican Thomas Jefferson was elected vice-president and Federalist John Adams was elected president, prompting congress to pass the 12th amendment.
1790s-1820s
Federalist party led by Alexander Hamilton, believed in strong central government. Favored the first president policies. After the Jefferson and Aaron Burr incident the 12 amendment was passed making it to the people in same party must run as VP and Prez.
1820s-1850s
National Republican party, formed led by John Quincy Adams. Supported economic nationalism just like federalists. In 1834 turned into the Whig party. Supported North government (commerce gov on trade, Northern States). Henry elected president in 1840. Whigs and Free- Soilers make up the Republican party in 1854.
