What's coming up?
Friendly Reminder: Please Do Not Send in Food for Valentine's Day
As a reminder, no food will be allowed to be sent in for sharing. R.S.U. #22 does not accept unsolicited food items at school (i.e., Valentine's treats). This is to better manage our district’s wellness policy guidelines, food allergy safety and to prioritize non-food* rewards and treats. We sincerely appreciate your efforts to support our policies and to understand our rationale for implementing them.
Civil Rights
Mrs. Randall's and Mrs. Whitehouse's fourth grade classes are finishing their social studies unit in the Southeast region. One tour stop is the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama.
Students learned that in the 1950's people were segregated against in a variety of places/ways. It took strong and brave citizens to protest and make change.
The team participated in a "silent" civil rights march through the school. They created posters and slogans protesting a prejudice that African Americans were still experiencing during this time period.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION
DENTAL HEALTH
Community Partners Help Raise Awareness
National Children’s Dental Health Month begins on February 1st and goes for the entire month of February. The RSU 22 Health Team is excited to be able to shift our focus back to preventative health care in our schools this school year. With that being said, we will be celebrating dental health month district wide on Monday, February 13th. The program will serve all students in grades pre-k through 5th grade throughout our schools.
WIth the generosity of our McGraw and Weatherbee PTOs, the Smith PIE group, Evergreen Family Dental, and Downeast Dental, we are able to provide just under 1,000 students throughout the district with a toothbrush, tooth paste, and floss. Colleen Jolley, who is a member of the RSU 22 Board of Directors, a parent of three, and also a local dental hygienist, will be filming a short educational video on proper brushing and flossing, as well as well as the importance of dental health in the overall well being and success of our students. We will also be handing out age appropriate educational activity packets for all of these students as well as we celebrate "self care" during our Kindness Week activities at Weatherbee.
Happy brushing,
Natasha

RSU 22 Equity Audit Report
RSU 22 Community Conversation
RSU 22's Strategic Plan is committed to the optimal learning of all students. To achieve our mission the district is focused on studying our existing practices and ensuring that we promote the equitable learning of all. This week, the RSU 22 Community Relations Committee hosted our third community conversation for the 2022-2023 school year. These sessions are designed to share perspectives and focus together on the shared success of our students in RSU 22.
This recent forum focused on a suggestion that came out of the Equity Audit Report and was brought up in our first community conversation in June. Based on research from our students, staff, and community, a suggestion to restructure our middle schools was recommended. To be clear, there is no plan. This is a compelling idea that was born out of a district self study.
We invite you to join the conversation and hope you'll attend future community forums. We have included the Equity Audit in the newsletter for your reference, it can also be found on the RSU 22 website.
