CANS AROUND THE OVAL UPDATE-ENDS OCT.19
Hello Wildcats!
There is one week left in C.A.N.S. Around the Oval! Click on the link below to donate today. Donations will close on Wednesday, October 19th.
Dollars sure make a difference, since every $1 donated equals 2 meals of food that CAN be provided to Food Bank for Larimer County clients. Help Werner meet our goal of donating $500.
Sincerely,
Werner Student Council and Kindness Club
PARENT/TEACHER CONFERENCES
Each fall and spring, there are days scheduled for parent conferences on the school calendar (Oct. 13 & 14). At Werner we have built in more flexibility. You can expect to conference with your child’s teacher at least once during the first semester (so more time can be devoted to each conference) and again in the spring by phone or in person.
Communication is never limited to one or two meetings. Anytime a concern arises, or if there is information to be shared, please call for an appointment with the teacher, school counselor, or principal. Please do not expect to conference on a drop-in basis with your teacher. Teachers’ days operate on a very tight schedule. They will be better able to help you if they have time to gather information and sit down for a meaningful block of time.

Physical Education Updates
Morning PE: This is a before school PE class for 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders. We work on skills and play lead up games for many activities. This program will start Thursday, October 27, 2022 and will end Friday, March 10. This semester, we will meet on Thursdays and Fridays at 7:45 AM. For more information visit Coach J.’s Learning Page. To sign up your child, e-mail Coach J. at djulian@psdschools.org.
Drop in Basketball: This is a lunch recess basketball game for 4th and 5th graders. I will supervise 4th and 5th graders playing basketball in the gym. Students ‘drop in’ to the gym after they eat lunch on Mondays and Tuesdays and Coach J. will split up teams and supervise gameplay. This starts Monday, October 17, 2022.
October Walk and Bike to School Challenge: This challenge is like the 5210+ Challenge, but in the month of October (and no t-shirts). A calendar will come home by October 3rd and should be returned after October 31. This challenge helps Safe Routes to School and the City of Fort Collins see what needs our school has for walking and biking to school.
Walk and Wheel to School: Another way that we are promoting students’ health is through walking or riding a bike to school. To participate, just have your child(ren) walk or ride their bikes to school on these dates are 10/31, 11/30, 12/21, 1/31, 2/28, 3/31, 4/28, 5/26 (or any day you can). We will remind students and families as each date gets closer and use announcements to recognize those that participate. If you live too far, just have them walk around the playground when they do get to school.
Running Club: This club will start after Spring Break. More information to come.

Werner Elementary Devices
October 12, 2022
Dear Werner families,
We appreciate your partnership in PSD and the important role you have in your child’s education. Given our combined efforts to educate children, we want to ensure that you and your child have access to the technology tools to support learning at home.
The purpose of this communication is two-part. First, to explain what would happen if we needed to provide learning at home due to unforeseen circumstances such as inclement weather and, second, to explain how your child can use a laptop at home for school-related purposes throughout the year.
Online learning due to an unexpected school closure
First, we want to be prepared in the event of a weather or emergency-related closure to provide online learning if the situation requires it. In the spirit of being prepared, we are sending home a laptop and charging cable with your child so that you and your child can become familiar with the device and the available tools you may need to access. We can also provide your family with a portable cellular internet hotspot, often called a “MiFi,” to get you connected to the Internet if you don’t currently have reliable home connectivity. Just let Debbie Powers, our Media Specialist (dpowers@psdschools.org) know!
Your child will bring home a laptop between Oct. 18 and return it on Oct. 19
Any time our schools must shift to online learning due to unforeseen circumstances, we will be instituting a shortened online learning schedule. During these closures to in-person learning, we would follow an elementary district-wide schedule for online learning. Secondary schools will maintain their current school schedule.
K-5 Elementary School Remote Schedule – Emergency School Closure Days
All PSD teachers have a Learning Page which provides asynchronous (learning independently) materials as well as information about how to connect to synchronous (learning together at the same time) virtual meetings.
9:00 am - 11:00 am: Virtual meeting with the classroom teacher on MS Teams
11:00 am - 2:00 pm: Asynchronous Learning and office hours support available from staff
Laptop use at home
Second, students can bring a laptop home as needed at any point. Examples of this may include assisting in completing homework, accessing virtual tutoring, access to additional enrichment activities, for parents to complete PSD forms, or to use other parent tools, such as ParentVUE. While in some families, this may be unnecessary, in others, we recognize that a laptop, paired with a portable MiFi hotspot, might be an essential tool that helps connect your student and family to the tools and services necessary to participate in school today. Please talk with your child’s teacher if you would like to have a laptop go between home and school.
We invite you to engage in this opportunity to learn about the tools for remote learning as well as explore other ways your elementary student may benefit from ongoing, regular access to a PSD issued laptop at home.
With appreciation,
Hayden Camp
Principal, Werner Elementary School

- Plug in and power on the laptop.
- Have a MiFi? Connect the laptop to the MiFi for internet access.

- Explore Microsoft Teams or Google Meet and find the video on/off, mute on/off.
- Find the page for asynchronous learning (learning independently).
- Connect headphones, if you have them, and see if you can adjust the sound with and without the headphones.

Halloween Parade and Parties-Oct. 31
Halloween Parade and Parties- Our annual Halloween Parade will begin around 3:00 p.m. on Monday, October 31. Parents are invited to view the parade out on the playground. Parties will be held in each room before the parade sometime during the day. Room Parents and/or teachers will be communicating out to families on needs. Visitors will not be allowed for the parties this year.
Guidance on Halloween Costumes- Halloween is a great opportunity for dressing up in costumes that are creative and fun. We ask that you help your students plan for costumes that are not scary (e.g. zombies, vampires, etc.) and that do not use pretend weapons of any kind. Guns, knives, nun-chucks, bows/arrows, etc. will not be permitted. Students are okay with wearing facemasks. Please check the weather forecast before coming to school with their costume. The parade is outside, pending on the weather, and will last about 20 minutes.
School Lunch and Fee Payment Information
Paying for school fees and/or lunches is easy using SchoolPay. Below is the link for signing your student up, paying fees and/or adding funds to your student’s meal account.
PSD offers an easy and secure way to make payments to your child’s school on-line with a credit/debit card for fees and other charges as well as your child’s meal account through the District’s payment portal, SchoolPay.* The Pay Fees/Charges web page has information and instructions on paying fees and other charges online or go directly to the SchoolPay website.
Fees may also be paid in person at your child's school, paying with cash or check.

There Is No Wrong Way To PTA. How Do You PTA?
Donuts with Grown-ups needs your help!
A Werner family favorite event needs your help. The PTA needs an adult or a group of adults to host "Donuts with Grown-ups" this November. Without an adult host, this event will not happen.
The PTA provides almost everything you need for the event. We just need a host to pick the theme and help run the school wide event.
Please reach out to ptawernerelementary@gmail.com if you're interested in hosting this event.
DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee-HELP NEEDED

We need your voice! Especially those who are underrepresented in our Werner community. The Werner Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee was started last year and is looking forward to continuing to grow.

- nationalities
- non-traditional families
- mental health concerns
- physical, intellectual, or learning abilities
- financial or community resources
- religions and traditions
We would love for you to join the DE&I committee, attend our meetings, or just share your ideas and concerns via email. Let us know your thoughts on how to make Werner more inclusive to those who may be different.
