Building STEAM Skills
Future City Competition – Building STEAM Skills
Please help us notify elementary and middle school educators about the opportunity to participate in the North Texas Regional National Engineers Week Future City® program. The registration deadline is October 31.
We put the "E" in STEM:
Using a hands-on, inquiry-based strategy, the Future City program gives students a fun way to tackle real-world problems while building their STEM skills. Students work in teams, with the guidance of a teacher and an engineer-mentor to design a livable city of the future. Cost is minimal and any public, private, parochial or home school is eligible to enter. 2020 THEME: Clean Water: Tap into Tomorrow.
NORTH TEXAS OFFERS TWO FUTURE CITY PROGRAMS
1. FUTURE CITY COMPETITION FOR 6-8TH GRADES - Students employ engineering concepts to design their future city, first using SimCity software (that we provide), writing an essay on the theme topic, and then building a scale model to present to judges in January. The winning team gets a trip to Washington, DC to compete in the national finals.
2. FUTURE CITY JUNIOR FOR 4-5TH GRADES - In this introduction to Future City, the student teams write an essay about their solution to the theme challenge and build a scale model illustrating that solution in their future city.
This will be the 20th North Texas regional event. Last year more than 600 students participated. We need your help to notify teachers of this exciting, worthwhile opportunity. Contact me with questions or visit our website www.dfwfuturecity.org.
· Future City is aligned with the national standards for math, science and technology education (https://futurecity.org/resources) and has been approved by NASSP for inclusion in the National Advisory List of Student Contests and Activities.
· The handbook and website present several STEM activities that offer educators project-based learning opportunities that support the cross-disciplinary, STEM learning experience. These activities, combined with the Future City program, provide a masterful incorporation of practical application to the current curriculum content.

Order Your Free CED Binder - College Board
Hey AP teachers this information is about pre-ordering the Course and Exam Description binders. The CEDs will include a comprehensive overview of course content, detailed Unit Guides, and recommended instructional approaches. We want all AP teachers to have access to this information about their AP courses over the summer, so we are shipping hard copies of the resource, in a binder, to the address each teacher provides. You will be able print the CEDs from AP Central for use at the district level starting around May 20th.
Dear AP Teacher,
Later this year, 35 AP® subjects will receive new course and exam descriptions (CEDs). The CEDs will refine and clarify the scope of content that can be assessed on the AP Exam for college credit, and they'll provide a suggested topic and skill sequence that you can adapt to your needs rather than having to build from scratch.
Print copies of the CEDs will be available in customizable binders, and you can preorder a free copy below. We’ll start mailing CED binders in June; you’ll also be able to download a PDF version from AP Central® starting in late May. https://apcentral.collegeboard.org/about-ap/news-changes/ap-2019/2019-20-course-updates-index?SFMC_cid=EM130019-&rid=30697308
