PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Happy October Sutter Families,
The month of October will bring cooler weather and many exciting events to Sutter Middle School. We will continue to honor Hispanic Heritage Month through October 15th, and we will continue to recognize Breast Cancer Awareness month as well. Our Sutter Pillar of Character focus for this month is Perseverance, so students will spend the month learning about the importance of perseverance along with practicing strategies to help them persevere.
The first Friday of the month, October 7th, will be fun, as students participate in our monthly Popcorn Friday celebration. SMS students will exchange Cougar character cards for popcorn provided by our amazing Sutter Middle School PTA. In sports, we will wrap up a great volleyball season and conclude a fantastic cross-country season in which Sutter students competed at a high level representing our school as student athletes. With that, we look forward to the beginning of boys’ basketball, with tryouts taking place October 17th.
An event we are very excited to host is our first Autumn Music Serenade on October 13th! Our Sutter Middle School chorus, orchestra, jazz band and wind ensemble will all perform. In addition, staff and students are excited to participate in our Red Ribbon week Door Decorating Contest that is a competition between advisory classes! We will end the month with Spirit Week hosted by our outstanding Leadership students and celebrate together at our October Fright Fest.
Here is to an amazing October!
Sincerely,
Tarik McFall

FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
Sutter Middle School
A Note from the Health Office Regarding Medications
Hello!
We just want to send out a reminder about the school’s policy on medications. If your student is needing any medication, we must have a signed form on file in the health office along with the medication in the health office.
Students are not allowed to have medication in their possession at any time. The only exceptions are:
· Students with asthma are allowed to carry an inhaler if there is a signed medical form from the child’s physician.
· Students with anaphylaxis are allowed to carry an EpiPen if there is a signed medical form from the child’s physician.
The school does not supply medication of any type. The student’s parent or guardian must provide all medication needed to be taken at school. This includes all prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medication including but not limited to pain relievers (ibuprofen or acetaminophen), cough drops, antacids, creams, and ointments.
The school nurse, health assistant, or other designated school personnel will administer the medication to a student provided that the school office has received the following:
· A district medication consent form signed by the physician and parent for prescription medication.
· A district medication consent form signed by the parent/guardian for over-the-counter (OTC) medication.
· The medication is sent to school in the original unopened over-the-counter (OTC) container or pharmacy prescription container.
· Medications for 6th grade students shall be brought to the health office by a parent, guardian, or designated adult. Students 7th and 8th grade are allowed to bring OTC and (non-controlled) prescription medications to the health office.
· Refills of medication are the responsibility of the parent/guardian.
· All medications shall be held in the school office, in a secure location, in the original container labeled with the student’s name.
· Parents need to be in constant communication with the office when their students are on daily medication, or at any time they are concerned, even if the medication is not given during the school hours. Please inform the school if your student is taking a medication that may affect his/her behavior.
· Parents and students are responsible to pick up any remaining medications at the end of the school year, or the left over medications will be discarded.
NO MEDICATION CAN BE GIVEN WITHOUT FOLLOWING THE ABOVE PROCEDURES! (Ed. Code 11753.1)
Thank you and please reach out with any questions or concerns!

Student Social Emotional Learning Survey
Dear Sutter Middle School Families,
We thank you and your family for being our valued partners as we work together to provide excellence in education and social emotional wellness for the 21,000 students in our district. As you may already be aware, building our social-emotional learning skills is an ongoing commitment in Folsom Cordova Unified. Through our partnership with Panorama Education, we will be asking for your children in 3rd grade through 12th grade to reflect on their own mindsets and approaches to learning via an online survey they will be completing at school. The survey shouldn’t take more than 20-30 minutes to complete.
The survey content will ask students to self-reflect on the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) social emotional learning (SEL) competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making. For students in Preschool-2nd grade, their teachers will be completing a teacher perception survey on your child's demonstration of CASEL SEL competencies.
The responses to these surveys will be completely confidential as their responses will provide invaluable insights into their experiences and how we can improve and adapt our district to their needs.
For more information about Panorama Education and to see examples of how schools use this data, please view the linked video. If you have any questions about the SEL survey, please don’t hesitate to contact us at 916-294-9035.
Sincerely,
Jenna Trejo
