Cheerleading
Kendall Cacich 5th Hour
When Did it Begin?
Cheerleading started in about 1887. At the beginning cheerleading started as an all boy sport now the sport is mainly girls. There is a lot of conflict about if it is a sport or not. I strongly believe it is. Cheerleading started as a school sport. Cheerleaders would try and get the crowd going and encourage the players.
Positions
As a flyer there are a lot of responsibilities. A flyer is a top girl or the girl in the air. The flyer has to know her counts so she can stay on time with the music and the other girls. The flyer has to be tight so she has a smaller chance of falling. Lastly, the flyer needs to have facials to she will look good while flying.
Stunts
This is a picture of nine stunts. In a cheerleading routine there are about three sections of stunts containing the pyramid, basket tosses, and a separate
section for the first stunts. Stunts can contain one to five people.
section for the first stunts. Stunts can contain one to five people.
Uniforms
Weather you are an all-star cheerleader or a school cheerleader you will have to wear a uniform. In the picture above the flyer is wearing a half top. Most school teams are required to wear full tops. New rules are slowly being made so all all-star cheerleaders have to wear full tops.
Sport?
There has been a large controversy if cheer is a sport or not. I think it is because it fits the definition which is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment”. Cheerleading takes a lot of effort and dedication. You cannot just show up to practices and expect to be perfect. You have to go home and practice everything: your motions, dances, stunts, tumbling, and facials.
