Featured Speakers
Joyce F. Doak, Lt Col, USAF (Retired)
During the Vietnam war, Mrs. Doak decided she wanted to be part of “Dustoff” where patients were air evacuated from the battlefield via helicopter and taken to field hospitals MASH style for care. She was unable to fulfill that goal at that time and ultimately entered the US Air Force at Keesler AFB, MS where she worked as an operating room nurse. Later she transferred to the 186th Medical Squadron, Meridian, MS Air National Guard unit where she became Chief Nurse responsible for staffing and training of other nurses and nursing technicians. Later she moved to the 117th Medical Group, Birmingham, AL Air National Guard serving as Unit Training Officer. All together she spent over 21 years in the uniform of the United States Air Force.
James A. Doak, CMSgt, USAF (Retired)
Jim Doak joined the Alabama Air National Guard, part of the U.S. Air Force, in 1970. After attending Basic Military Training he became part of the medical department serving in many roles beginning with Medical Administration, then Aerospace Medicine, Nursing Service, Bioenvironmental Engineering, and, finally finishing his 40 year career back in Medical Administration. He earned his final military rank of Chief Master Sergeant, a grade only 1% of Air Force members ever achieve. His most memorable time in service was when he and 30 other members of the Birmingham joined other AF people at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina to set up and staff a field hospital after the local hospital was destroyed by the storm. He served there with his wife Joyce where the staff performed surgeries, delivered babies, pulled teeth, and kept the people with no other source of medical care taken care of. Once the local hospital was rebuilt and back up and running, they took the field hospital down and returned home.
