Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Dana Field Trip
Yesterday saw the beginning of our first SustainEd field trip for the semester! We started the morning with small group tours of the conservatory at the Botanical Gardens, where scholars continued to learn about tropical, temperate and desert biomes, as well ecosystems. The tour was followed by some additional exploring, a healthy lunch, and some serious shopping at the gift shop for souvenirs!!

In the afternoon, we headed to the School and Natural Resources and the Environment to tour the Dana building to learn about its renovation and material reuse. We finished the day with a few sustainability stations lead by the Teaching and Inspiring Environmental Stewardship (TIES) team, informing our scholars about the benefits of renewable energy sources.

We would like to thank Liz, Genevra, Mindy, Julie and the rest of the team at the Botanical Gardens, as well as Rebecca and the TIES team at SNRE for all your efforts in making yesterday so enjoyable for us all. Lastly, we must say a massive thank you to all our parent chaperones from HFA:ES, and of course, the student scholars for making the SustainEd program what it is! We all had a lot of fun and we are looking forward to the next field trip at Recycle Here! Detroit.
Coming up this week:
This week at HFA:ES we will be kicking off the Renewable Energy module! The students will be classifying the difference between renewable and non-renewable energy on Tuesday, followed by a more in-depth look at the four main sources of renewable energy (hydro, geothermal, solar and wind power) on Thursday. If you would like to facilitate a lesson this week, please let us know ASAP.
