CAP CONNECTIONS

Mrs. Tuttle's CAP Class ~ Shields Elementary

September 24, 2015

Class Mission Statement

We, the SHIELDS CAPtains, will participate in advanced learning, continuously grow, and move on to the next grade level, by being responsible, doing our best, working together, and learning from our mistakes.

ELA

The Secret Garden

We have read Chapters 1-4 in The Secret Garden and this week will be re-reading these chapters for the purpose of digging deeper in the text. Re-reading is something the students will be doing throughout the year as they learn how to read closely to find specific information from the text. Finding evidence in the text will be a big focus this year as they practice how to support their thinking using explicit and implicit information from the text. The goal is for the students to apply what we are learning in whole group to their independent reading.
Class Blogs

We've been practicing our writing skills as we started our blogs. Check them out! www.kidblog.org/class/mrsuttlescapclass

MATH

Factors, Multiples, and Leftovers

This week we began making generalizations about prime, composite, and square numbers. Your student should be able to define each of these types of numbers and provide you with examples. We will be using Venn Diagrams to sort numbers based upon the categories they fit into.

Writing in math will be an area that we will focus much attention as students need to be able to effectively communicate their thinking. A rubric will be used to grade concepts, communication, and vocabulary in journal responses. You will see some of these coming home next week.

Be PROACTIVE!

We continued working on ways to Be Proactive at home, school, and in our community this week. Next week, we will move on to Habit #2 which is "Begin with the end in mind."

HOMEWORK

Everybody completed their first week of homework!! I hope the choice boards are working well for everybody. As always, if you have any questions or concerns about homework please email me.

After attending a meeting with the other CAP teachers, we have decided to change our spelling homework. Spelling will now include lists of higher level vocabulary along with content vocabulary that we are working on in school. You will see the new page in next weeks homework packet. We will be using the program spellingclassroom.com for practice and testing of the words each week. More information will be shared at Open House.

THANK AN OFFICER field trip

Our field trip to the Lewes Police station to deliver goodies was a success! The police officers were extremely appreciative of all the goodies and surprised us with a FABULOUS tour of the police station. Each child also received a pin and a pencil! Keep an eye out for an article about our service learning project in the Cape Gazette!
