2018 LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES
Iowa School Counselor Association
ISCA'S LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES
Continued advocacy for understanding and protecting the role of the school counselor as well as the use of the accurate title school counselor rather than guidance counselor. School counselor more accurately reflects the comprehensive, proactive nature of our role.
Preserving funding for any program/initiative which affects school counselors at all levels (State, District, AEA).
Please mark your calendar for ISCA and Iowa ACAC Visit the Hill Day!
There is no cost to participate in the Visit the Hill program. Register yourself and bring along secondary and postsecondary students. Let them be a part of the process and learn from a visit to The Hill! (Travel scholarship also available to assist with some of your costs.)

ISCA'S LEGISLATIVE POSITIONS
- Support of Safe Schools for All (ie: DACA, LGBTQ, Bullying/Harassment)
- Ratio of School Counselor to StudentsThe Iowa Code presently mandates all K-8 and 9-12 schools have a school counselor. Mandated School Counselor-to-student ratio: School districts must be working toward a 1:350 ratio for all levels.
- Continued Support of AEAs
- ISCA supports the funding for AEAs.
- All AEAs have a contact to work with school counselors. However, there is an inequity in professional development opportunities for school counselors across the state.
- School counselors would support equitable and specific professional development opportunities for all school counselors.
- School counselors help all students in the areas of academic achievement, social/emotional development and career development, ensuring today's students become the productive, well-adjusted adults of tomorrow.
