If child services or the like is called they should meet with the children and needed adults in a private room in the office. Because when it's an area around a classroom word seems to spread like WILDFIRE! These children affected should have privacy to their already traumatic life.Response
It is unfortunate to hear that the adults are not keeping a situation about a student confidential. The office is not a private location for these types of meetings when there are other meetings and parents around the office on a regular basis. There is a high level of traffic through the office and many students may not feel safe. There really isn't a private place in the main office. Most of the time when a call is made to child services it is about the child's parent. Having the child sitting in the office with an investigator and possibly a police officer puts the child in situation for their parent to see them or another parent who knows the child to see them, which could further put a child in danger. It has always been practice to conduct these investigations in a counselors office where a student feels more comfortable.
Any time child services is involved with a student that information should be kept confidential. Any information that is shared about a student is on a need to know basis and the information shared should be accurate. These situations can be highly emotional for everyone involved. We have committed to presuming the positive and presume that a student's needs are being met. Moving forward if you notice someone talking about a student in a way that is not appropriate it would be best to address it with that person an effort to protect the student. If that doesn't work seeking administrative advice would be best so that it can be addressed immediately.
If you have concerns regarding a student and situations involving child services please see Dr. DeWeese as any time we are involving child services I should be made aware that they have been contacted.
