How To Fill Out The FAFSA Step-by-Step
FAFSA Quick Tips:
- Make sure to take your time filling out the application/no mistakes
- Learner's name needs to be the same on the application as it is on legal documents and in Pathways
- Have information needed ready to access
- Apply regardless of income
- Create one e-mail for all applications
- Learner (fills out their part) and Parent (fills out their part) of the FAFSA
- Takes about 30 minutes
- Apply to at least one California college (or community college) to also qualify for the Cal Grant
- Can get free money for certificate and trade schools, not just colleges
- Click on resources in the application and ask for help with questions
- APPLY EARLY! The sooner you apply, the sooner you will know how much money you are getting!

California Dream Act Application (CAADA)
What is the difference between the FAFSA and the California Dream Act application?
Students should only complete one of the applications (not both), according to the citizenship requirements below:
1. You are eligible to complete the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov if you are a:
- U.S Citizen
- Permanent Resident
- Eligible non-citizen
- T Visa holder
- Undocumented
- Have a valid or expired DACA
- U Visa holders
- Have Temporary Protected Status (TPS) 2 | Page Revised 09/19
- Meet the non-resident exemption requirements under AB 540
