SLE WEEKLY UPDATE
October 21, 2022
Good afternoon,
Homecoming 2022 was a success last week and we were happy to see our students together enjoying the tradition.
We sent a group of students to Ford Field this week to attend the Detroit Lions Business Fair. Students had the opportunity to meet with representatives from their business departments in the areas of marketing, analytics, community relations, and operations. Thank you to Mrs. Couyoumjian, our Career Development Facilitator for making opportunities like this possible for our students!
As we move toward the end of October, please continue to monitor the academic progress of your students. We encourage students to speak with their teachers if they are struggling, sign up for and attend Cougar Hour for the classes where they have a need for extra help, and make themselves aware of the re-take/re-do policies for their classes. If students are in need of a tutor, some of our NHS students offer opportunities for help for free, and you can find a list of additional tutors on our website by clicking on the counseling and student services link.
Have a great weekend!
SLEHS vs. SLHS Game INFORMATION (Pink Out)
We are excited to welcome the community to the EAST vs. SLHS game at South Lyon East High School at 7:00 PM. We are anticipating a larger crowd for this game and want to share some information with you in advance.
In order to provide the safest environment for our younger spectators, we are asking that all spectators that are not high school age be accompanied by an adult while attending the game. All high school-aged student spectators are asked to bring either their driver's license or high school ID and be prepared to show them at the gate.
Student spectators should not bring large backpacks or bags into the stadium as they will be asked to return them to their vehicles or have them picked up. Outside food and beverages are also prohibited.
Both schools will wear pink to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Law enforcement officials will be helping monitor traffic and parking conditions.

Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent Volunteer Help Needed - POTLUCK FOR TEACHERS DURING CONFERENCES
Hello SLEHS Families:
On Thursday, November 10, Parent Teacher Conferences will take place. The teachers have a long day and it is our tradition to provide them with a delicious potluck style dinner provided by our families. All items need to be brought to the main office before 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, November 10. You will need to ring the bell and have your ID ready in order to be let into the building.
Please bring the food donations on disposable dishes as much as possible. If you send in a crockpot, make sure the pot and the lid are both labeled. Anything you want returned should be labeled. We do not have the ability to wash any crockpots or dishes, and they will be in the main office after the dinner. You can pick them up there after 6:30 or so.
Here is the SIGN UP SHEET. Please email Laura Hogan (hoganl@slcs.us) with any questions.
MEDIA CENTER NEWS
Every year, the third week of October is recognized as Digital Citizenship Week. It is a great time to think and learn more about digital citizenship and how we can support students in developing the skills they need to use devices safely, ethically, and effectively.
In September, all 9th grade students learned about why it is important to create a media balance in their lives, talked about what this looks like and made a personal goal for this semester of one way they could balance their personal digital lives.
Common Sense Media is one resource for families to get more information about parenting in a digital age. They offer four online webinars to help parents guide their children to make good digital decisions. This playlist includes four videos addressing many frequently asked questions:
1.What are ways I can set boundaries and support my kids in their tech lives?
2. How can we ensure our kids are having high quality experiences?
3. I don’t know anything about social media or the apps my kid is on. What do I need to know to keep them safe?
4. I’m worried that my kids will use social media inappropriately. And what are these “challenges”?
The webinar playlist can be found here.
Working together, schools and families can prepare kids to think critically and use technology in positive, creative, and powerful ways.

my-SAEBRS Screening Communication
South Lyon Community Schools will be administering the mySAEBRS screener to our secondary students in grades 6-12 twice this school year, once in the fall (October/November) and again in the spring (March). We would like to share some information about the screener before it is administered at our middle and high schools.
The mySAEBRS screener is utilized as a tool to gather data at the district level to help South Lyon Community Schools understand what needs our students have and how we can best support them. The goal of utilizing this screener is to help design programming that best supports our students to be as successful as possible in school. Our current practices will continue for identifying and serving students with behavior, academic and emotional needs, even with this additional data. Students will not be contacted about their individual answers on this screener.
This screener is not required for students at the secondary level, but will be given during Cougar Hour on 10/25. As a parent/guardian, you are welcome to opt your child out of this screener by filling out this form. Additionally, on the day of the screening, students will not be forced to complete the screener and can opt-out themselves.
Information about mySAEBRS:
The Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener (mySAEBRS) is a 20 item rating scale that students complete about their social, academic, and emotional behaviors. It is grounded in a conceptual model which states that school success is predicated not just upon academic achievement, but also success within multiple inter-related behavioral domains. The mySAEBRS assessment is designed to evaluate student functioning in terms of overall general behavior (Total Behavior; 20 items), as well as Social Behavior (7 items), Academic Behavior (6 items), and Emotional Behavior (7 items). Screening is the process of checking all students' performance (taking their "temperature") up to three times a year using mySAEBRS. Students will complete the mySAEBRS screener twice this school year, once in October and again at the beginning of March. This notice and option to opt out will be offered again in late February for the secondary screening date.
The mySAEBRS screener will be completed by students in grades 6 through 12. It is a 20-item rating scale that includes questions about a student's social, academic and emotional behaviors. The mySAEBRS screener is available in both English and Spanish for students. The student completes the scale online and it takes approximately 10 minutes to complete mySAEBRS. Students can only take this once during a screening period.
Each mySAEBRS item has a score value from 0 through 3. These three scales (social, academic, and emotional) combine to represent a Total Behavior (20 items) scale. The online system (Fastbridge) reports a student's overall performance on each mySAEBRS scale as a sum of item scores within each scale.
Below is a list of the items in each scale. Students will use the following frequency indicators to identify how often they experience the described behaviors.
Never - Sometimes - Often - Almost Always
Social Behavior Indicators:
I argue with others.
I get along with my peers.
I lose my temper.
I disrupt class.
I am respectful.
