The Community Connections Newsletter is a monthly digital communication source presented to our Southwest Independent School District families and community by the Office of Community Education. In the Community Connections Newsletter, you will find information about adult education and community enrichment opportunities as well as family and community resources.
GED® Preparation Class
The Southwest ISD Office of Community Education in partnership with the Education Service Center Region 20 offers free adult education classes to adults interested in earning their Certificate of High School Equivalency GED. This program prepares students for the GED® Test in Reasoning Through Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Mathematical Reasoning.
Class schedule: Tuesday and Wednesday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

Fall Registration and Assessment Dates: (August 20, 21, & 22) Must attend all three dates.

ESL: English as a Second Language Classes
The Southwest ISD Office of Community Education in partnership with the Education Service Center Region 20 offers free adult education classes to adults interested in learning or improving their English language literacy skills. The ESL Program is designed to help adults with communication skills in English through conversation, reading, and writing. Participants are eligible for class if they are 19 years or older with a valid ID. (Photo ID, Matrícular Consular de Alta Seguridad, Military ID or Passport)
Registration and orientation are required in order for students to attend class.

Citizenship Course/Curso de Ciudadanía
The U.S.Citizenship Test is a required step in the naturalization process to become a citizen of the United States. This 8-week course is designed to prepare eligible individuals for the naturalization exam.
The course will offer individuals...
- knowledge of history and government necessary to answer the 100 civics questions on the naturalization exam
- practice on completing the Form N-400, Application for Naturalization
- an orientation with instructions on what to take to their interview with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), what to expect, and how to be prepared for their interview.

La Prueba de Ciudadanía de los Estados Unidos es un paso requerido en el proceso de naturalización para convertirse en ciudadano de los Estados Unidos. Este curso de 8 semanas está diseñado para preparar a individuos elegibles para el examen de naturalización.

SWISD GED® Tesing Center
The official GED® test is a four-subject high school equivalency test that measures skills required by high schools and requested by colleges and employers. After a student passes all four areas of the High School Equivalency Test, his/her diploma or credentials will be issued by the student’s state but he/she will receive a complete transcript to apply for college, state training, or use to apply for employment. All examinations are available in English and Spanish. The High School Equivalency Test will test students in the four subject areas:
- Reasoning Through Language Arts (RLA): 150 minutes (includes a 10-minute break)
- Mathematical Reasoning: 90 minutes
- Social Studies: 90 minutes
- Science: 90 minutes

2019 Summer Youth Program
The Southwest Independent School District Office of Community Education and the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department have partnered to bring a safe, structured, high energy, and low-cost summer program to the community.
The Summer Youth Program is a program in which children ages 6 through 12 years are given the opportunity to participate in activities that include active games, sports, arts & crafts, and a weekly enrichment program in Fine Arts, Science, Literacy, Fitness, and Nutrition. Participants enrolled in this program will also be served a nutritious breakfast and lunch. Space is limited, so mark your calendar.

Registration: Wednesday, June 12, 2019, 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m.
The 2019 Summer Youth Program will be held June 17, 2019, through August 8, 2019. The program will be closed July 1, 2019, through July 5, 2019. Transportation will not be provided.
Fit Family Challenge
The Fit Family Challenge is a FREE 12-week summer program is designed to get families active, eating better and learning about health and fitness. This includes events and resources to help your family be more physically active and learn about good nutrition. There are free weekly workouts at seven sites and every three weeks, a family-friendly Big Event is held on a Saturday where we’ll give away a $1,000 cash prize.
