Valley Oaks School
Community Service Highlight We are very proud of all our VOS students in their recent community service endeavors! Good Job! One exemplary case we'd like to highlight is of 8th grader, Elias Leventhal. Elias has been blessed with amazing skills in many areas including piano and basketball. He plays on year-round basketball teams and is in the chorus at PJHS as the accompanist with his piano playing. He is so busy! He is co-enrolled in two online high school level honors classes and a SRJC class - this semester is history and last semester was biology! If anyone had an excuse to want to skip the efforts needed to volunteer it would be Elias. Instead, Elias, like 8th grader Harland McCready and 10th graders Becca Koh and Nicholas Barajas, chooses to commit to a regular, continuous schedule of doing community service. Elias has been volunteering as a math tutor for 4 hours every week: one hour at the Boys and Girls Club, 1 hour at a private junior high in Petaluma, and 2 hours at the public library. In addition to showing up to tutor, Elias creates lesson plans and finds fun and inspiring activities for his tutees. Those are very fortunate who get to have Elias teach them! Thank you, Elias! | Congratulations to our 2019 Fall semester Honor Roll students! All eight students made the Principal's Honor Roll! We unfortunately had no students make the regular Honor Roll but we expect to have some this semester! Please read our Honor Roll requirements in our Handbook here. Pictured above is junior Channing Matthews. She was the only one that was also co-enrolled last semester. Channing got an A- in her PHS chemistry course and, like our other seven Principal's Honor Roll students, she earned a 4.0 GPA. Here are the names of our Principal's Honor Roll students: 1. sophomore Brenda Amador, 4.0 2. junior Teja Burgess, 4.0 3. senior Shelby Curr, 4.0 4. sophomore Sofia Doolittle, 4.0 5. senior Flynn Loveless, 4.0 6. junior Channing Matthews, 4.0 7. senior Althea Patchett, 4.0 8. senior Jade Polaski, 4.0 | Role Model, senior Mikayla Galbraith Senior Mikayla Galbraith is a role model for all teenagers everywhere. She has had to overcome enormous physical and mental challenges in her young life. Mikayla represents the approximate third of our population who come to VOS because of medical or family issues. A third also come here because of extra-curricular activities and a third simply to embrace the alternative life-style and/or co-enroll. Mikayla has type 1 diabetes that developed after complications from pneumonia at age 9. She was given only a 15% chance to live! She spent 3 years in the Home & Hospital program and then was able to stabilize enough to be a regular VOS student as a sophomore but continued to have regular medical setbacks - some severe. Mikayla is very positive, intelligent and capable, and has no problem sharing that although she is very close to graduating, this is her 5th year in high school. Her advice? ..."Don't Panic". Mikayla works out three times a week, is an expert at complicated medical technology and uses it every day, and will be going to the JC where she says she'll "figure it out as she goes". Good Luck, Mikayla, You are a Superstar! |

Newcomer, 8th grader Kaylee Heide We are so pleased to have new student, 8th grader Kaylee Heide with us! Kaylee is new to Petaluma. She has primarily lived in Santa Rosa and Forestville. Her favorite animal is a frog and her favorite food? - "anything sweet!" Having time to herself to read and to do pencil drawings is what she most likes to do aside from hanging out and talking with friends. She is really enjoying Art with Ms. Garcia right now because they are practicing realism in art with people and animals. She has had many pets in the past but her favorite are her two cats Isis and Sweetpea, but some day she'd like to "have a big fluffy dog like a Husky or German Shepherd". She turns 14 on 2/22/2020, and she says she will be applying for a job as a bagger at Safeway! Good Luck, Kaylee! Her favorite trip was to Mexico where she enjoyed many beaches and her dream is to travel some day to beautiful Bora Bora where her friend has family, and experience "the very clear water beaches". | Newcomer, sophomore Sophia Munoz We are likewise also so pleased to have new student, sophomore Sophia Munoz with us! A life-long Petaluman, Sophia came to VOS to be independent and to take advantage of the flexible schedule. She aspires to be a singer-songwriter and she loves to write poetry. She spends at least 6 or 7 hours a week playing her acoustic guitar and once a month she performs at the Redwood Cafe in Cotati. Aside from music, Sophia is passionate about wanting to travel! This past summer she was in France and Italy and she has also enjoyed trips to Mexico. Her favorite food is Chipolte and she has been a pescatarian for a while now but is beginning to commit to a complete plant-based diet. Something unusual about Sophia?... she has 10 dogs! (4 are puppies). Welcome Sophia! |

Job & School: senior Violet Provencal Senior Violet Provencal is a cashier at Round Table where she has been for 15 months, and she is pictured here with her manager. Violet says that her job at Round Table feels like her second home - she knows everybody, it's busy, and she feels very comfortable and valued. She briefly left Round Table to work at an upscale gym but it was a bad experience for her - the management was harsh, things were slow, and her co-workers were not so friendly. The most difficult thing about her job?... "in the beginning it was really hard to stay okay when it got very busy - to not crack under pressure." Violet's good friend, senior Madison Cathcart, who goes to VOS, also works at a pizza parlor. | Job & School: junior Katie Caffi Junior Katie Caffi is a phenomenal worker! She is both way ahead of graduating on time and she works over 40 hours a week at the UPS store in Rohnert Park! She has been at this job and doing this many hours at it for the past seven months. The most difficult thing about her job? ...Katie says it is "keeping a positive attitude with customers when they're unhappy" - Katie is impressively upbeat, positive, and kind. The best thing about her job is her coworkers, her nice boss, and the great income she makes! A very large amount of her work time is with Amazon drop offs. She has enjoyed learning the cash register, and she is very glad to finally feel like an expert at the most difficult task: setting up a mailbox. |

In this 13 second video, Minna is at the California Training Facility in San Diego. We'll find out in April if she made the final cut for the Olympics. Right now she is on the Olympics pre-team and receiving a stipend.
University Bound - Teja Burgess Junior Teja Burgess is one of our A-G college prep students and she has been co-enrolled in French and will be co-enrolled in chemistry. Teja plans on becoming an obstetrician medical doctor but she has also considered becoming a surgeon or going into law. She has applied to UCLA, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, and UC Santa Barbara. Her favorite university right now is Santa Barbara. She is pictured here with a poster she made for an English project she completed for Ms. Kesseru's English 10 course which compared a book and a movie. Teja also loves horses! | University Bound - Devin Jones Junior Devin Jones is also one of our A-G college prep students and he has been co-enrolling at SRJC for the past two years. Devin is planning on doing the 2-year transfer track at SRJC upon graduation. He has not decided which university he wants to transfer to but he will enjoy the benefits of earning a 4-year university degree while also having enjoyed the convenience and familiarity of the SRJC for his first two years. Devin has always had great math skills and aptitude and predicts that he will become a CPA and use those skills. Devin has been with us since the 8th grade! |

Ms. Halsey & Alumi Erin Dougherty Erin Dougherty popped in and let us know she will complete her 2-year transfer program at SRJC this December and she was overjoyed to share her news that she is doing the SRJC Study Abroad program in Florence from this February to May! She will transfer to either UCB or UCD. She wants to study anthropology. Erin gave us news of her friend who graduated with Erin from VOS, Julia Sherman. Julia went directly to UCD to study environmental biology, is living in a co-op with 8 other students and having the time of her life! Both young ladies are extremely hard workers and we are so proud of them! | We Love Having You Come Back to Say Hello! This month we were so happy and fortunate to have multiple former students come stop by for a quick visit! We were visited by Molly Fuqua, who was a VOS student 4 or 5 years ago. She and her two sisters and one brother went here. They had many children in the family and Hanna graduated from us and went off to South America to do her Mormon mission year. The whole family moved back to Utah so we did not get to see but Hanna graduate. Molly is doing her mission year here in Petaluma and Heather went to Russia for her mission year. Jessica Rue Coulman stopped by. She continues to work at Sprouts Farmers Market and lives with roommates in Rohnert Park. Jessica continues to race cars and she let us know the good news that she now is a sponsored race car driver! | Visitors, Alumni Ben and Emma Hoffman Pictured from left to right is Emma Hoffman, teacher Ms. Halsey, Ben Hoffman, and our campus supervisor Barbara Bollock. Emma is now a sophomore at UC San Diego. She said she was shocked to find out that she made straight A's for fall semester! She is studying to become a scientist at an Oceanic & Atmospheric Research Lab and will continue on to get her PhD. She is interested in the effects of climate change. Ben has one more semester at SRJC and has probably taken every math and science course they offer! His focus is electrical engineering and he plans to transfer to UC Davis and eventually have a career in Alternative Energy/Power. We're so glad all of these wonderful prior students stopped by and shared a little bit more of their young lives with us! |
