Newsletter Week 10 Term 2
Sacred Heart School Petone Thursday 7th July, 2021
PRINCIPAL'S PEN
Malo ni parents and friends
Well we have come to the last week of the term and we look forward to a relaxing holiday at the end of this week.
Thank you to everyone who came and joined us for our Matariki afternoon last Thursday. We look forward to our Hangi this Friday. Thanks to all those people who are helping with this event especially Tane Wilson from our BOT who is organising the Hangi.
Thanks to everyone for supporting us while we were at COVID Alert Level 2. It helps us to keep everyone safe.
We offer our sympathy to Scott and Lucy Duncan and family on the recent death of Scott's Mum. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
Chocolate: Thanks to everyone who has sold and returned their chocolate money. All outstanding money or unsold chocolate is due back by this Friday please.
Rongohia Te Hau: The link to the survey was sent our last week . We encourage you all to complete the survey as it will help us with our future planning and give us a great picture of our school.
Classes 2022: We have started thinking about our classes for next year and how they will be made up. All our Senior classes will be quite large next year due to the fact that we only have 13 Year 8's leaving. This will have a flow on effect right down the school. If your child will not be returning to Sacred Heart next year we would appreciate knowing this as soon as possible as this will also contribute to how many new enrolments we can take for next year.
School finishes at 3pm this Friday 9th July for the holidays and reopens at 9am on Monday 26th July.
Thought for the Week
"Let us ask the Lord, through the intercession of Saints Peter and Paul, to help us be open to His grace, so that we can see, judge and act from the truth and freedom that come from the encounter with Christ." (Pope Francis @pontifex)
Happy holidays!
Ke manuia koutou uma I te Alofa o te Atua
God bless
Liz

Our Special Character
We held our Confirmation Retreat Day last Friday. Well done to all our children for your wonderful participation and preparation. The Sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated by Archbishop Paul Martin sm on Sunday 1st August at 5.30pm Mass. Please keep all our candidates and their families in your prayers. There will be a practice in the church at 6.30pm on Thursday 29th July.
Our Special Character Review went very well and we received some very positive verbal feedback about our school, our staff, students and community. We look forward to sharing the report with you next term.
RE in Kea Class
In Kea class we have been learning about ‘Our Gracious God’. We have been expressing our feelings about ourselves in a positive way, and recognising that we are growing into the person God wants us to be.
Below is the picture we made identifying our favourite aspects of ourselves, which are gifts from God.

Celebrating our students
All of our classes have been busy learning about and celebrating Matariki with stories, writing, music and art. We enjoyed an afternoon of sharing what we have learned with parents and caregivers which ended with an incredible cultural performance from our wonderful tamariki. This Friday our Matariki Celebrations finish with a shared lunchtime kai of Hangi.
Our walls are decorated with beautiful class art and Matariki art. Below are pictures of just some of the art we have on display.
Friday Lunchtime Hangi - We still need a couple helpers for serving on Friday at 1pm. If you are available, please contact Anna in the office. Thank you to those who have already offered your help; it is greatly appreciated.

Kereru have been learning and writing about the Matariki Whetu.
"Tupuarangi is the whetu for food from the sky, like berries and Kereru. During Matariki, Kereru were harvested." Written by Lochlan.
"Hiwa-i-te-rangi is associated with a prosperous season. Hiwa means vigourous growth. Mahi Wha string games were played during Matariki." Written by Sofia-Rose

School Leader Speech - by Amelia
Have you taken the time to appreciate the things around you? The things you have? Your friends or your family that supports you? Sometimes we may forget how lucky we are to have that and a roof over our head, to have clothes and to have food provided for us.
Today I’m going to talk to you about being thankful and grateful. It’s a feeling or showing appreciation for something done or received. Being appreciative means being grateful for everyone and everything around us and recognising the full worth of something.
For example, we are thankful for everything our teachers and teacher aides do to help make learning fun for us. Let's make a choice to take the time to thank someone.
In Colossians Chapter 3 Verse 17 it says:
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
Thank you
Board of Trustees update
The Board of Trustees met last Wednesday. It was pleasing to hear that the initial verbal feedback for the Special Character review was positive and we await the full written report. Thanks to all those involved with the review, teachers, board members and pupils.
As a result of papers filed in the High Court in December last year by The Association of Proprietors of Integrated Schools, an agreement has been reached with the Government on additional funding for school infrastructure. The amount for Sacred Heart is yet to be confirmed but it will allow the school to make some major improvements for the future.
The board would like to Tane and those involved in the planning for this Friday’s Matariki celebration.
Thanks
Mark
