Veterans Day 2018
We value the commitments you make each day in your homes as well as in our larger community. On November 12, 2018, we look forward to celebrating and honoring our Veterans. We know there are many Union families whose lives have been personally shaped by one of the branches of our Armed Forces. It is our desire to plan experiences that are meaningful for our students while simultaneously appreciative of the brave men and women that have served or are currently serving our country. We welcome all members of our community to attend our celebration. If you or a member of your family have served our country in this capacity, we would like to recognize you in a special way.
Union Elementary will be honoring our community’s Veterans with an all-school convocation at 9:15 on Monday, November 12, 2018. If you would like more information or are interested in attending, please follow the directions on the Google Doc below:

Student Council Announcement for Veterans Day
On Monday, November 12th, Union Elementary will be celebrating Veterans Day. Your child will learn about what a veteran is and why we celebrate this holiday. Also, please dress in red, white, and blue to celebrate with our country! We are asking for quarter donations to go towards the Honor Flight and helping Veterans get to see the memorial in Washington D.C.! This coin collection will occur the week of November 5-9. Please show you school spirit and dress in red, white, and blue for our convocation on November 12th! Thank you for your support and Happy Veterans Day.

UPCOMING MEETING
Don't forget, we have an amazing PTO meeting planned for you on Monday. Come to the Union Café at 7pm on November 5 and have a front row seat to hear all about an issue that is at the forefront of every parent's mind...Internet Safety.
Dan Layton, Chief Technology Officer for ZCS, will be on hand to chat with us a little about technology, internet safety and how it affects our kids. He will also be sticking around to answer questions, so please submit your concerns below, via messenger or at union.pto@hotmail.com.
You won't want to miss this opportunity. Childcare will be provided.
UNION EXPRESS MAIL
The Union Express Mail is up and running!! Mail will be delivered once a week by our second grade students. Stop by, say hi to Mrs. Edwards and Mrs. Grissom, grab a stamp from the bin in the office and drop a letter in the mail to your Union Star. Students can obtain stamps and letter forms from their teachers to send mail to friends, teachers and administrators. Classroom addresses can be found on the PTO website.
MOVIE NIGHT
Have you guys seen 'Incredibles 2'?! It's...well...incredible. If adults could come to Movie Night it would be standing room only, I'm sure. But, alas...only K-4, the rest of us will have to drown our sorrows with a quiet night at home while our kids enjoy a night out. Mark your calendars for Friday, November 9th and sign up below. The cost is $5 (pay at the door - cash or check made to Union PTO). Drop off starts at 6:15pm at Door 11, please come in to sign your child in and plan on picking them up promptly between 8:10 and 8:15. Movie goers will receive a snack of SmartPop popcorn, bottled water, and Welch's fruit snacks (please do not send other food or drink with your child).

Background Check Information
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VOLUNTEERS
We value partnerships with our families and welcome parents and guardians to serve as volunteers in our schools. Each ZCS building offers a wide variety of volunteer opportunities.
Examples include:
- Field Trip Chaperones
- Out of Town/Overnight Chaperones
- Tutors
- Volunteer Coaches
- Classroom Helpers (PTO parties/room parents)
- Library Helpers
- After Prom Workers
- Field Day/Jog-A-Thon Volunteers
- Book Fair Sales/Athletic Ticket Sales
During the school day, all volunteers are expected to sign in at the front office. Prior to the volunteer opportunity, all volunteers must sign a Non-disclosure Acknowledgement Form and have successfully completed a Full Criminal History Background Check. Necessary background check paperwork is available on the ZCS website at the Volunteers/BRAVO link and should be submitted at least 10 days prior to the intended volunteer date. Volunteers must also view the state mandated confidentiality/bullying video, provided on the Volunteer/BRAVO website. The volunteer will pay the fee* for the full background check which will expire after 5 years. The link to apply for the full background check can be accessed on the Volunteers/BRAVO link on the ZCS main webpage. For more information, contact the Volunteer/BRAVO Coordinator.
CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR VISITORS
During the school day, all visitors must enter via the front door and sign-in at the front office. Visitors need to be prepared to present a government issued photo ID which will be scanned against the National Sex Offender Registry. All visitors will be issued a visitor badge/tag to be worn inside the building at all times.
Examples Include:
- Lunch Guests
- Classroom Guest Speakers
- Classroom Special Events (Grandparent Day/Famous Hoosiers/etc.)
- Parent/Teacher Conferences
We ask that all visitors schedule an appointment to meet with teachers, counselors, administrators and all other staff members so that we may best serve everyone. Visitors other than parents/guardians must be prearranged and organized through the main office.
*ZCS thanks all volunteers for generous support of our youth and schools. Thank you, too, for supporting assurance of student and staff safety by completing and paying for a volunteer background check
