- It is critical you make an appointment with the families and notify the preschool if that is where you will assess the child. Please do not arrive at a preschool site unannounced.
- You may invite the family to bring their child to your school to complete the W-APT. Parents must remain at the school for the entire assessment - no "dropping-off" is allowed.
- Do not make judgements regarding preschool programming (ie: whether or not a student should have an IEP, specific programs or programming, etc.). You are the preschool's guest, and our preschools strive to meet the unique needs of all students.

Redesignation Body of Evidence
At our April ELD Department Meeting, you created a great list of potential evidence to support a student's redesignation from LEP to FEP Y1. Your thinking, along with the resources sent to you, are now posted on the Frequently Used Documents - Redesignation page of the DCSD ELD/ESL Google site. **Please note, grade reports, EPRs, and progress reports are no longer considered acceptable evidence.
Redesignation of Students in a Transition Year
Due to the rigor of ACCESS and the body of evidence required for redesignation from LEP to FEP Y1, it is not recommended to "hold" redesignation until the transition is complete. If a student has a solid body of evidence that supports he or she has reached academic and social proficiency in English, redesignation is appropriate. If a student does not have a solid supporting body of evidence, redesignation is not recommended. As you can see, the body of evidence is critical when considering if a student is ready to be redesignated to FEP Y1!
Redesignation Kindergarten, First, and Second Graders
As you know, the academic and social language expectations increase at an incredible rate in the early elementary years. That said, some students will become proficient in English at an early age.
Redesignation of Students without ACCESS Scores
You may have noticed a change in the options provided by CDE in their guidance regarding the redesignation of English Learners who do not have ACCESS scores. If you have a student who is performing at or above grade level and appears to be proficient in English, please contact me to begin the body of evidence collection process. We will redesignate these students (when they are ready, of course) on a case by case basis using a new process outlined by CDE. **If a student has ACCESS scores, they must be a part of the body of evidence.
