Neil Leifer
Muhammad Ali "Get Up!"
Background history
This photo of boxing great, Muhammad Ali standing over his disoriented opponent, Sonny Liston, was taken by Neil Leifer in 1965 in Lewiston, Maine. Leifer said that as he took this picture, Ali was taunting Liston to "Get up and fight, sucker!" This image was by far the most famous picture ever taken of Muhammad Ali. This photo was an action shot in a large stadium. Ali had previously taken the heavyweight title from Liston and was defending his title in his second bout against Liston. Muhammad Ali knocked Liston out in 1 minute in the first round of the fight.
What we can learn
This picture's style is old timey and vintage. This photo also captures history and is an action shot of a sport. This black and white photo is considerably more vivid than most of today's pictures. Leifer did not create this shot, he however captured it.
My Opinion
From this photograph, I believe that this picture captures a unique and memorable part of history. Neil Leifer took this shot in less than great conditions but captured the moment perfectly. Personally I like this photo a lot. This photo shows an amazing idol and boxer in a very strong and confident manner. I would not change anything about this photo. This photo successfully captured the confidence and fire in Ali's eyes. I could try to think of something to change but my efforts would be in vain, I think that this picture is truly perfect.
Colored Version
It is unclear if this colored picture is 100% accurate, however this is the picture in color to show what the arena was like and the atmosphere was for this fight.
