Dear Hawkins Families!
As you might be aware, Hawkins Elementary and all of our Brighton Area Schools are "Heart Safe Schools" which means we follow strict expectations set by the State of Michigan on what we need to do to help save anyone's life who is having a cardiac arrest. One of the many requirements is to hold a cardiac arrest safety drill which will be held this Thursday in the morning. Our school will be going into something called "shelter in place" which means students and staff are safe in our building, but we do not want anyone in our hallways due to a medical emergency. Teachers will continue teaching and students will continue learning with all of the classroom doors closed. Because we try to simulate this drill to being as real as possible, medical responders will respond and arrive to our school. Our teachers will be talking to our students and preparing them for this drill however, I also wanted to let our families know in case your child comes home with questions.
#marchisreadingmonth is off to an AWESOME start! Did you all see the special guest readers we had in our school this week? So much fun! Next week is flashlight reading in our STEAM center which is always a favorite for our students. Keep filling out your #marchisreadingmonth sheets so our students can find out the mystery words on our WIG (wildly important goal) board in our lunch room.
Have an awesome weekend everyone!

In lieu of a summer school program, our district received a grant to partner up with "Kids Read Now" to provide all students with an IRIP (Individualized Reading Improvement Plan) an amazing summer reading program for free. Students are eligible to receive up to 9 self-selected books over the summer which they get to read and keep. The goal of this program is to improve reading skills, help prevent summer reading loss and get students excited about reading!
We are extending the "Kids Read Now" opportunity to all JK-3rd grade students currently enrolled at Hawkins. The cost of the program is $60 per child. The benefits you will receive for your $60 are:
An invitation to a Summer Reading Kick Off Event, Thursday, May 30th, after school at Hawkins, where you will receive the first 3 books for your child to take home and begin their summer reading. (Students choose books at their reading level, ahead of time, with the help of their teacher).
Up to 6 additional books at your child’s independent reading level (Your child will receive 9 books total, as long as they complete the reading).
Books mailed to the home, addressed to your child - which is exciting because all children love to receive mail!
Each book your child receives will have questions on the inside cover for parents to help check for understanding and stimulate discussions on the books.
Ability to communicate by text or email with Kids Read Now to request your new books and to receive reminders.
Children who read all 9 books will receive a certificate and a special prize in the fall.
If you would like to know more, visit www.kidsreadnow.org.
We are very excited about this summer reading program! If you are interested, please send $60 per child, cash or check (made out to Hawkins) by Wednesday, March 6th. If you have any questions about this program, please our Literacy Coach, Brandy Ward at (firstname.lastname@example.org).

Girls on the Run for 3rd and 4th Grade Girls
Hi Hawkins Families!
My name is Morgan Bridgewater, and for those of you who do not know me, I am a new first grade teacher here at Hawkins! Not only is this my second year teaching, but it is also my second year coaching Girls on The Run (GOTR)!
GOTR is a curriculum based program that is about SO much more than running. It envisions a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams! Included in the program is a ten week training for a 5k, along with a curriculum promoting competence, confidence, character, and so much more!
We will be holding practices after school on Mondays and Wednesdays at Hawkins from 4:00-5:30pm starting on March 4th, and running until May 15th. We will end the season with a 5k that everyone is welcome to run/walk/skip on Saturday, May 11th. Registration is officially open, and will end on February 22nd. Scholarships are available (please contact email@example.com for more information). To register your child for GOTR, please click here.
Coaching along with me will be Betsy Schmidt (4th grade teacher at Hawkins) and Heather Graves (2nd grade teacher at Hawkins)! If you are a parent interested in volunteer coaching, please reach out to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I am so excited to be a part of Girls on the Run again this year, and cannot wait to empower and run with your girls after school.
