Hawk Squawk February 2019
A Newsletter from Hiteon's Parent Teacher Club (PTC)
Presidents' Message
Greetings Hiteon Families,
Welcome to February!
The Super Bowl Food Drive was a HUGE success thanks to the generosity of our Hiteon Community. The Conestoga Middle School Food Pantry sends their thanks as your donations were a much needed blessing!
Your PTC has been busy planning for many of our valued events: Donuts with Dudes/Dudettes, Family Bingo Night, Science Expo, Art Lit, OBOB, McTeacher Night, Popcorn Friday, and an upcoming author visit. The Hiteon students look forward to these events and it would not happen without the effort of so many caring adults from our community. Thank you!
Planning for our 2019 Fun Run is under way. Thank you to the parents who stepped up to be a part of the planning team. We would also like to thank our newest 2019 Fun Run Sponsors: Smile Dental and Hessel Law Offices. Thank you so much for your support!
Do you have spare time with nothing to do? No, you probably don’t! We are all busy with work, families, and other commitments. At the same time we all value dropping our children off at a safe school filled with staff and parent volunteers that invest in our children’s lives. We bring this up to identify a big need. The PTC Board has a two year term limit for each board position; most board members have served their two-year term which means we are expecting big turnover. To help make the transition smooth, we invite you to contact us with any questions you may have about these positions. We would love to familiarize you with the different roles on the board and how the board works to keep these valuable programs alive from year to year.
Sincerely,
Alicia Schenbeck and Marilee Shafer,
PTC Co-Presidents
Going for the Gold!
This month, ALL students who turn in their reading log will receive a coupon for a free Pizza Hut personal pizza--who doesn't love pizza?! Help your student stay on track with logging their hours and submitting the form by the 7th of the month for the previous month. Forms should be turned in to the classroom teacher who will collect them for the volunteer. Speaking of volunteers, we are looking for a rockstar (or two) to take over the reading incentive program for next year. Contact Jen and Sarah if you have any questions.

Hiteon Science Expo
Thursday, March 14, 2019 6:00pm – 8:00pm
That’s right! It’s time to let those scientific minds fly and design an experiment reflecting your curiosity and interests. You can do an experiment, create an invention, or reverse engineer an existing product – your choice!
Key dates are:
Entry forms sent home on Friday, Jan 25
Deadline for registration is Friday, Feb 15
Project boards go home the week of Feb 18 - 22
Science Expo night is Thursday, March 14
Here are a few guidelines for participating:
Pick a project idea and sign up, either individually or with Hiteon friends/siblings - up to four students may work together. Only one entry form is needed per project. The parent signing the form must ensure that all parents are aware and in agreement. (Students should only officially participate in 1 project registered for the Expo).
You may work with your family to do your project, but remember it should be your work and your words explaining it.
Make sure to follow the safety guidelines on the registration form!
On the Science Expo night, doors open at 6:00 pm and project reviewing begins at 6:30, starting with projects done by kindergarteners and progressing by grade through fifth graders. Once your project is reviewed you can pick up your participation prize! This is not a competition, so relax, have fun, and enjoy!
Additional tips for parents and students, including online resources for project ideas can be found on the Hiteon PTC Website at: http://hiteonptc.org/our-enrichment-programs/science-fair/
Please contact karlmeyer@comcast.net with any questions.
Volunteer Spotlight with Marilee Shafer
1. You’re involved in a number of volunteer capacities at Hiteon. What all do you do for the Hiteon community?
The president's job description is "to in general supervise and monitor all activities of the PTC." This involves budget planning, fund raising, leading PTC meetings, communicating with staff and parents, supporting the executive board and chair positions, and being involved in planning and implementing events or enrichment programs. That sounds like a really big job, but thankfully I get to partner with my Co-President, Alicia Schenbeck, to lighten the load. There are so many amazing parents filling volunteer positions and working behind the scenes to make Hiteon great. I have been able to watch and learn and provide support when needed.
2. As you know, PTC Board members are allowed to serve only two years in a given position. As the two of you near the end of your second year, what have been some of the highlights of your time as PTC Co-Presidents?
Two highlights so far this year were the Family Dance and Picture Day. Our planning team used their individual gifts to make our "Carnival" themed dance come together with music, concessions, carnival games, prizes, a picture booth, and face painting. It was a fun filled night! Picture Day was especially fun for me. I was able interact with so many of the kids and see them looking their best for pictures!
3. Volunteering at Hiteon has obvious benefits to the school, the students, and the community. How have you personally benefited by being involved with the PTC?
I love the personal connections I have been able to make with the staff, kids, and parents. The Hiteon community is filled with fun, intelligent, caring, and talented people and I am thankful to be a part of it. Another benefit has been having my girls see me volunteer and now they want to be involved. They willingly got up at 6:00 am last year to help prepare for the Donuts with Dudes event!
4. What do you do when you’re not at Hiteon?
Our family really enjoys basketball. Right now two of our girls play in the Southridge youth program. Jake and I both coach and so our weekends are spent in the gym coaching and cheering on our girls. As soon as it warms up I love to paddle board.
5. Is there anything else you’d like other parents to know?
If you are interested in being our next PTC president please reach out to us soon! We would love to talk with you!
Lost and Found
Hiteon Elementary has a 30 day Lost and Found Policy. The Lost and Found is completely emptied once a month. If your student is missing a coat, lunchbox, water bottle, or hat, these items can often be found in the Lost and Found. It is a good idea to check back often because it may take a while before items find their way to the Lost and Found. Thank you for labeling items with your student’s last name so they can easily be returned.
Take a moment to stop by and search through the Lost and Found (or remind your student to do so) before noon on Thursday, February 28th. That is when ALL unclaimed items will be donated to the Beaverton School District Clothes Closet for district families in need.
The PTC Board (Still) Wants You!
The PTC Board is still recruiting for all board positions with openings for the 2019-2020 school year. The Board has provided brief descriptions of what each open position does and would invite anyone who is interested to contact that position and ask questions, perhaps shadow for a week and see what it is all about. Many of these opportunities can be Co-Positions, and the Board is lots of fun. The Hiteon PTC is a non-profit with term limits of 2 years in a row per position. Six of eight people on the current Board have served their limit so we are looking to fill at least one person in each of these positions.
What happens should we not form a full board? Well, we must have at least a President, First Vice President, and a Treasurer. If we can’t fill those positions then the non-profit will have to dissolve and all monies that our children have raised will revert to the school to do with as they see fit. This would mean the end of PTC-sponsored activities such as Art Lit, Reading Incentive, Science Expo, Bingo Night, Family Dance, Art & Culture Night, class parties, some assemblies, and many other activities that help enrich our children at Hiteon. This would be sad to see this all go so please take a moment and read through our open Board Positions to see where you may be able to assist.
President
The PTC president oversees the PTC executive board and serves as a liaison to the Hiteon staff. Through monthly meetings with the Principal and Vice-Principal, the president collaborates with Hiteon administrative staff to address the needs of the Hiteon community. The PTC president also schedules and runs board and general PTC meetings and supports the executive board members in their roles.
For more information please contact President@hiteonptc.org
First Vice President (VP1)
This position works in conjunction with several committees and would oversee all fundraising activities at Hiteon...for example Fun Run, Popcorn, Dining 4 Dollars & Book Fair. It is a great way to get involved! For more information please contact VP1fundraising@hiteonptc.org
Second Vice President (VP2)
The VP2 is a liaison between the committee chairs and the board. The VP2 helps the committee chairs with anything they need including budget concerns, recruiting volunteers, and providing information on what the committee does. The VP2 attends the events and assists where needed. For more information please contact VP2committees@hiteonptc.org
Treasurer
The treasurer is involved in the PTC as an officer of the board and in many PTC-sponsored activities. Responsibilities include creating and maintaining the annual budget, banking, monthly audits, and all reimbursement requests. The treasurer is also very involved in the annual Fun Run. Ideally the incoming treasurer could shadow that process during this year’s Fun Run.
For more information please contact Treasurer@hiteonptc.org
Volunteer Coordinator
The main duty of the volunteer coordinator is to make sure that all activities have adequate staffing, and to assist at those events when needed. You will work with the Board and Committee chairs to send out volunteer solicitations as well as to keep the My Volunteer Page (MVP) system up and running with current information. This can include adding new activities/events, posting announcements, running reports on volunteer hours, approving new volunteers into the system, etc. The MVP system keeps information from year to year so no need to start from scratch every year – it’s just a matter of editing.
