Teacher Leader Support

Teachers, this week, our wonderful Teacher Leaders and Mrs. Fennema will continue engaging each of you in coaching cycles including the review of lesson plans, structured observation, reflective conversation, and establishment of next steps. The goal of this practice is to provide each of you with individualized support towards achieving the goals outlined in your PLP. The observations conducted by our Teacher Leaders are non-evaluative and will not be included in the final calculations of Teacher Effectiveness!

To assist with communication, your Teacher Leader will be creating personalized observation feedback templates and dropping them into your teacher plans folder. See below for a snapshot of this template!

Tutoring Begins This Week Officially!

We know that many of you have already begun your tutoring - but this week it officially begins! If you have not already, please discuss tutoring schedules with your grade level team members and send out invitations/notifications to the students you will be inviting to attend.

Here are the tutoring expectations...

TK - 2 Teachers

  • Total time: 50 - 60 minutes per week.
  • Time frame: May be broken into smaller sessions, may be offered before school or after school between 7:30 -8:00 or 3:10 - 4:00.
  • Days Offered: Your choice!

3-5 Teachers

  • Total Time: 50 - 60 minutes per week
  • Time frame: May be broken into smaller sessions, may be offered before school or after school between 7:30-8:00 or 3:10-4:00.
  • Days Offered: To avoid conflict with detention - afternoons tutoring sessions may only be held on Mondays and Thursdays. Mornings can be any day you choose!
  • Where: ODD numbered classrooms (in the afternoon) - your choice if its the morning!

6-8 Teachers

  • Total Time: 100 minutes
  • Time Frame: 2 50-minute after school sessions
  • Days Offered: Mondays (3:10 - 4:00) and Thursdays (3:10 - 4:00)
  • Where: ODD numbered bungalows (or Rms. 1-3)

Please work with your content area and grade level teams to discuss how you will support each other with tutoring! A few questions to consider:

  • Will each teacher conduct his or her own tutoring sessions? Or will each grade-level/ content area team work collaboratively to maximize the adults in the room?

  • Will tutoring be targeted, invite only sessions vs. all are welcome help sessions? Or a combination of the two (i.e. one day is invite only, the other day is open)?

Once you have discussed the details with your colleagues - please fill in the tutoring schedule linked here: Tutoring Schedule 2015-2016

Supervision Schedule

In light of recent events, we have realized that we need a little bit more help with supervision during middle school lunch and nutrition! We are currently in the process of hiring two new Vista team members to support us with this effort, however, in the meantime we are REALLY HOPING for a few more teacher volunteers. The google doc below includes the existing supervision schedule for the 3-8 campus, but if you have a few extra moments on a given day to donate supervision time - we would greatly appreciate it! Our goal is to have more of an adult presence on the yard to battle the somewhat chaotic feeling we have noted in recent weeks...

Supervision Schedule 3 - 8

Also, just as a reminder, please be sure to show up for scheduled supervision duties on time. During supervision, circulate and be sure to correct any unsafe behavior you notice!

Links to Important Forms

We have included links to some of the important forms you will use at Vista below - but they are also included in the virtual VIP Folder!

Detention Form

This one is super important for helping us keeping track of which students have detention on which days. Please submit every time you assign detention.

Office Referral Form

May be completed online or by paper (see the pink referral forms in your hardcopy VIP binders) but please be sure to submit either one when a student is referred to the office.

Technology Concerns Form

Our DVR (District Validation Review) is just around the corner!

In just 1.5 weeks, on October 6th, we have our DVR visit from LAUSD's special education review team. In order to begin preparing for this important visit we have included some introductory information about this visit as well as some teacher next steps below.

What is a DVR?

A District Validation Review is a review of a school's special education systems and processes conducted by the Compliance Support and Monitoring Department of LAUSD. The purpose of the visit is to ensure that our school is not only complying with basic special education law, but that we are doing all that we can to support the achievement of our students with special needs.

During the scheduled visit, the DVR team will not only review student records (IEPs etc), they will also conduct targeted interviews with stakeholders - teachers, parents, and administrators.

How can I prepare for the DVR?

As a classroom teacher, the best way to prepare for a DVR visit is to be sure that you know and are supporting the academic achievement of your students with special needs. This Wednesday, Mr. Garcia and Mr. Alvarez will be conducting a staff wide PD regarding Special Education, but in the meantime we highly suggest that you spend some time (if you haven't already done so) reviewing your student passports, familiarizing yourself with the accommodations listed, and collaborating with our SPED team in implementing these accommodations in your classes.

Finally, please be sure to complete the staff survey that Mr. Garcia and Mr. Alvarez shared with you and return it to the SPED team as soon as possible!

Instructional Focus

A Classroom Culture of Excellence

(TEF Domain 2)

At Vista, our goal is to make our classrooms a place where students work hard, model strong character, are polite and attentive and most importantly – strive to do their best! The 5 Principles of Classroom Culture (from TLAC), if well balanced, ensure a culture that sustains and drives this excellence. Reflecting on each separately helps us understand our classrooms and why its culture is thriving – or how to make it better!

This week we will continue to focus on the building of this classroom "Culture of Excellence". During our Wednesday PD, we will reflect on all 5 Principles of Classroom Culture, but will specifically hone in on what highly effective Response to Behavior (2.2B) "looks" and "sounds" like at each response to intervention tier. We will be having presentations from ICEF Director of Student Services, Mr. Kene Washington, our very own school counselors, Ms. Amador and Ms. Booker, as well as our RSP Specialists, Mr. Garcia and Mr. Alvarez!

To support this school-wide focus, Mrs. Fennema and I will be starting the first round of informal observations this week. These informal observations will only address indicators from your PLP in Domain 2.
