Going into week three students are working hard to prepare for the Academic Showcase and complete their academic journeys in their individual classes. Instructors are ensuring that students goals are met and that they are enriched academically.

Instructor Spotlight
Dr. Geoffrey Akers
Dr. Geoffrey R. Akers, PE has worked in the defense industry for 45 years holding different positions as a Research Scientist, Program Manager, Mathematical Physicist, and Deputy Director of Systems Engineering. He has authored 16 publications in Electromagnetics and Acoustics in JASA (Journal of Acoustical Society of America and IEEE/URSI). Dr. Akers has a PhD in physics from the University of Connecticut, as well as an M.S. in Applied Mathematics and a M.S. in Nuclear Engineering; both from Columbia University. Dr. Akers also has an MBA in finance from Renssalaer and an M.A. in Policy from Johns Hopkins and a certificate in Advanced Business Management from Georgetown University.
Dr. Akers currently owns an electrical engineering design and development company. He has also been an adjunct professor in mathematics and physics at 7 universities.
Dr. Akers is an avid athlete having run approximately 85 marathons in the US and is listed in the 1998 USA Track and Field Directory for an accomplished record.
Melissa Pikul
Currently she serves as a member of Yale/Peabody Regional Teacher's Network for advising and assist fellow educators in the state of Connecticut. Her favorite part teaching with SIG every year is "is being able to tailor my class content to exactly what the students want to study-and they are such an interesting a enthusiastic crew."

Dr. Yvette Williams
Martha Dumas
Martha Dumas has worked at SIG Yale every summer since 2011. She’s taught What’s Your Point? (a debate course); College Prep; The Writer’s Word Palette; Facts, Stats & Studies; and the two courses she’s teaching this summer—Word Origins for SAT Success and Writing Matters. She has a bachelor’s degree in comparative literature from William Smith College and a master’s in English language and literature from Trinity College in Hartford. During the year she teaches writing at the University of New Haven, gives tours of the Mark Twain House, and is a book editor…all the while looking forward to a new group of students at SIG
