Growth Mindset - How to help your child worry less!
Is your child self-critical and easily frustrated? Does she/he feel uncomfortable with new challenges or particularly difficult tasks? If so, your child may be a perfectionist. To many people, this doesn’t seem like such a bad thing. After all, what’s wrong with setting high standards and pushing yourself to improve?
In reality, perfectionism can be unhealthy and damaging, especially for young children.
Dr. Carol Dweck, a Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, defines two different types of perfectionism:
- The first type is acquired by excellence-seekers. They push themselves because they are intrinsically motivated to achieve. This type is healthy and is associated with a growth mindset.
- The second type is acquired by someone who strives for perfection in order to avoid judgment and appear perfect to others. This type is associated with a fixed mindset and causes people to be self-critical, anxious, and quick to give up.
The excellence-seekers generally achieve more, are happier, and feel inspired. The fixed mindset perfectionists are likely to procrastinate challenges or avoid them entirely for fear of failure. Ultimately, they hold themselves back from the success they desire.
We are working everyday at Brentwood to build a Growth Mindset in every child!

Car Rider Pick-Up Reminder
Our car rider system is set up to ensure a safe and quick drop-off and pick-up of students. In order to achieve this, please follow the "car wash" method of moving from a 4 lane to a 1 lane line in front of the school. We ask that you merge one lane at a time starting with the lane closest to the school and continue across the front row of cars. This process will only work if everyone follows the "car wash" method of joining the one lane. Please merge with caution and respect your fellow Brentwood families. Thank you!

Student Health & Wellness Reminders
As part of our desire for a healthy 2018, here are a couple of basic reminders . . .
If your child is not feeling well, please keep them home until they are no longer ill. In order to kill infectious germs, remember to allow soap to remain on the skin for at least 20 seconds. Frequent hand washing is a great habit for you to reinforce at home.
Another measure you can take at home is to be vigilant for signs of head lice. We recommend checking your child’s head every week or two. Here are some tips:
Under bright light begin looking at the back of the head just above the neck area.
Part the hair section by section and look closely for crawling lice or nits (eggs).
You can tell the difference between nits and dandruff or fuzz by trying to remove the white speck. A nit is actually glued to the hair.
If you do see nits in your child's hair, make sure to look more carefully on the scalp behind the ears and at the nape of the neck for crawling lice.
Depending on the length and thickness of the hair, it should take between 5 and 15 minutes to properly inspect a child's head.
Let’s do what we can to keep these young ones healthy. Thank you for allowing us to work with your child. We are looking forward to many opportunities for learning this year!

Has Your Address Changed?
Have you moved recently? If your child rides the bus, we want to make sure your child is picked up on schedule and dropped off safely to your home. If you have changed addresses since you did the online registration in PowerSchool, we will need to have you fill out a transportation form so we can pass the information to the transportation department so your child's bus route can be updated.
You can find this form on our website. From the main page, click MENU, and then DOCUMENTS. Please return this form to the main office as soon as you can, so the appropriate changes can be made. Call us if you have any questions!
Update Information in Parent Portal
Parents are now able to do Year Round Updates in PowerSchool with the new Online Registration, now that “Returning Registration” has closed.
The type of updates the parents can do are:
- Emergency Contact changes
- Phone changes
- Email addresses
The types of updates Parents cannot do:
- Student address changes
- Parent names changes
(Contact the office for these types of changes)
Note: Parent changes must be done from a web browser, and not the PowerSchool app,
Simply sign into your parent power school account, and click on the “Year Round Update” link (see below) to update data in real time.

Become a Brentwood Volunteer
1. Every volunteer, field trip chaperone, or classroom party volunteer must have a background check completed through PCSC. Many of your completed these forms when you enrolled your children online this year as the forms were included. If you still need to fill one out for this year please contact the office well in advance of your first visit to do this.
2. Every volunteer must also complete a PCSC Confidentiality Volunteer Agreement in the office upon their first time volunteering each year.
3. Every visitor to our building during school hours must check-in at the reception desk and be entered into our Safe Visitor system. The very fist time you visit you must have your Driver's License or State Issued ID Card which will be scanned into the computer. Most likely you will NOT need it again upon subsequent visits because the system stores your information. (However, should a glich appear in the system and it is required of you it would be more convenient on you if you had your ID with you.) Every visitor is photographed at the same time they are checked in upon their first visit also.
Thank you for your flexibility as we continue to learn this software during our second year of its use. We know your first priority, as ours in the office, is the safety of all of our children.
(Lunch Room visitors will sit at a specially designated table with only their child and therefore will only be checked into our Safe Visitor system (#3) above.) They are not required to complete steps 1-2 above unless they want to volunteer in a classroom or small group setting, chaperone a field trip, or help out at PTO run classroom parties or events.)
