This week in 1D

Welcome back!

I hope you have enjoyed your Spring Break. Mine was excellent, and I am excited to come back now and make the most of the final nine weeks. I have checked, and that is all of the time that I have left with your wonderful children, so it makes these weeks very significant. I am sure that for the children, nine weeks seems like forever, but adults know that it will fly by very quickly. I am looking forward to the student-led conferences at the end of this month, and would also be happy for you to contact me at any time to discuss questions or concerns you may have regarding your child. I am only too happy to make a time to meet with you.

This week's photos show students working with 2 and 3-dimensional shapes. (See this week's photo folder.) The kids really enjoy these lessons.

Have a good week!

Library Used Book Sale

Once again it is time for our library annual used book sale. Beginning April 10th, we will accept any gently used books (clean, no pages missing) for this annual sale. The sale will be April 26, 27, and 28, including the Student-led Conferences. For every donation of three books, you will receive a coupon for one free used book.

Reminder: Principals’ Coffee and Parent Forum

The next Principals’ Coffee will be held on Wednesday, April 27 at 8:05am in the Elementary School Presentation Room. The focus of the morning will be on student placement for the 2016-17 school year. We will be talking about our procedures for creating new class lists for the 2016-17 academic year and about how class placement is determined in light of both student groupings and teacher assignments. We hope that many of you will join us for this informative session.

Parent Forum

There will be a Parent Forum during the second half of this Principals’ Coffee. If you have topics, feedback or questions that you would like to put forth for agenda consideration please e-mail Mrs. Ibrahim, our Parent Forum Representative, at by 9:00am on Sunday, April 24. Please specify in your communication, which division your child is in, as Mrs. Ibrahim represents both lower and upper elementary. We look forward to you joining us.

Big Idea: Asking Questions to Determine the Author's Message

Teaching Points:

  • Readers check the information they find in one book by reading lots of other books about the same topic.
  • Readers also ask: 'What does the author want me to think, feel or know about this topic?”
  • Readers ask questions about facts in fiction books.

Big Idea: The Craft of a poet

  • Line breaks
  • Repetition
  • onomatopoeia

BIG Idea: Halves and Quarters of Rectangles and Circles

Students should be able to:

  • Name equal parts (halves, fourths or quarters) and wholes

  • Partition rectangles and circles into 2 or 4 equal parts

  • Identity when shapes do and do not have equal parts
