Thankful for Children... and, Homework?
A colleague shared a research article with me titled “Don’t Help Your Kids With Their Homework.” The title caught my eye both as someone in professional education, and as a parent of two children who are now twenty-six and twenty-three.
I recall countless evenings of helping my kids review their work, often times wondering ‘what is the point.’ It was often very challenging for me to not ‘just do it’ and move things along for them, even though I knew better. I knew that the struggle was as important as the content being taught. I knew from my formal teacher training that children learn as much, if not more, from struggling with concepts and being challenged, as they do by being given the ‘correct’ answer. Nonetheless, the temptation to jump in and ‘rescue’ my children was great. One strategy that seemed to help me find common ground in my own mind was to get my kids to step back a bit and ask questions about their homework. Such as: What didn’t they know and what did they know about the problem? Why they thought the concept was being taught? What if I just did their work for them, what would really happen in their lives? To my surprise, teachers shared with me that my children sometimes also asked similar questions of their teachers in the classroom. This led to interesting conversations, and more often than not, they completed their homework themselves and earned their own grades.
Based on my experience, I believe children need the love and understanding of parents to support them throughout life. The article referenced above, shared findings that indicate that one powerful type of parental involvement is when parents go to great lengths to seek out effective schools for their children, while others accept the status quo at the school around the corner. I know that RHLS parents have gone to great lengths to seek out RHLS as a school of choice for their child, this is a choice and form of parental involvement that will have lasting effects; eternally lasting effects.
As we approach Thanksgiving, I hope that we are all thankful for children and their homework. Thankful to have the opportunity to be challenged by both children and their homework. More so, thankful for a community of Christian believers here at Red Hill Lutheran Church and School who together form a foundation of support and encouragement to live for Christ each and every day.

October Philanthropy News
Wednesday's chapel offering was $816.00! Wow, that is amazing. This brought our total chapel offerings for October to over $1,500.00, this was enough for more than 30 desks, 10 more than our goal of 20.
The students at the school in Burkina Faso will be blessed for many years to come by this donation and I know it will help Barto and Tenielle Yelkouni in their mission and ministry work there to share the Good News of Christ to many.
Thank you all for your incredible support!

Vote NOW for Parenting OC Top Teacher & School Heroes
As an RHLS Parent, you have this special invitation to nomination any RHLS Teacher or Employee for School Heroes of OC Schools. As a parent of a child here at RHLS, you know how hard every teacher and staff member works, and can truly appreciate all that each person does to go above and beyond. You know personally what teachers and staff members do to educate, inspire and motivate children to dream. They provide Christian examples, and share with them God's love on a daily basis.
This is an opportunity to tell others how you feel about some of our teachers and staff here at RHLS, and why they should be considered a Top Teacher/School Employee in Orange County (aka a School Hero).
The School Heroes nomination process is open now through the end of November. Please prayerfully consider taking the time to nominate a teacher or staff member you feel is truly a School Hero, by going to Parenting OC’s website https://parentingoc.com/school-heroes/ and clicking on the ‘Click Here to Nominate’ link. You may nominate any teacher or staff member at RHLS. Your spouse, relatives, and friends may also enter their own individual nominations (the more the better). You will be asked for the name of the teacher or staff member, their email address and phone number (please use the school phone number of 714-544-3132). You will have 400 words maximum to describe why you feel the teacher or staff member is a Top School Hero in Orange County. I thank you in advance for your time and prayerful consideration of this competitive nomination process for the teachers and staff here at RHLS. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me directly pmarquardt@redhillschool.org.

Preschool News
Thanksgiving Feast: Wednesday, November 20th
Wednesday, November 20th we will be celebrating Thanksgiving at Preschool with a Thanksgiving Student Feast. Our teachers will be retelling the story of the very first Thanksgiving Feast with the Pilgrims and the Native Americans (our Pilgrims and Native Americans will be represented by our students). For lunch that day, we will come together as a preschool community in prayer, therefore, no packed lunch is necessary on November 20th, unless you know your child will not partake in our Thanksgiving menu and/or there is an allergy concern.
Our awesome room parents will be organizing the larger portions of the feast food while the children will be preparing their smaller feast items in their classrooms. They will be engaged in the washing, cutting, and preparing a smaller portion of the actual food.
We are inviting all our preschoolers to attend the Thanksgiving Feast but, due to limited space and since we are coming together as a "whole preschool" we ask that only the scheduled volunteers and the Tuesday/Thursday parents (a licensing requirement) attend.
We thank you and our room parents, in advance, for contributing to this special experience.
Menu: Turkey, mashed potatoes, cornbread with honey butter, corn and pumpkin pie
Preschool: Operation Christmas Child, November 20th
This is such a beautiful Christmas community project for your family to experience. Our preschool children will present their shoebox and sit with their class in designated pews. Due to licensing requirements and limited seating, preschool parents cannot sit with the preschool classrooms and we need to leave one empty pew following the preschool classrooms.

Children's Ministry
Red Hill Lutheran Church offers a weekly Children’s Ministry Program for all children in Kindergarten through 5th Grade. Using a combination of large group and small group activities, we intentionally strive to create an environment where children come to Know Jesus, Impact the world around them, become Disciples of Jesus and Serve others – K.I.D.S.! If you do not already have a church home, we invite you to join us.
Family Worship on is the first Sunday of the month, at which time whole families are invited to worship together during our 10 am Contemporary Worship Service in the Sanctuary.
For more information, please contact Children's Ministry Coordinator, Beth Stoffregen.

November Teaching Series
“THANKS – IN THE WILDERNESS”
OVERVIEW:
“Thank you.” It’s one of the first phrases most of us learn to say, but it’s also one of the most difficult things to say and really mean! That’s true for us today, but it was also true for God’s people in the Old Testament.
We invite all kids to join us as we journey through the book of Exodus. After the Israelite's escaped the land of Egypt, the Israelite's spent 40 years wandering through the wilderness on their way to the Promised Land. While they wandered, they struggled to remember all of the ways God had provided for them (kind of like we still do today). On this journey, kids will discover that we can thank God for so much – for providing for us, for being God, for giving us wisdom and for never giving up on us.
Come and join us!
PHASE BOOK RESOURCES!
Many families are checking out books from our Family Resource Cart. THIS IS SO FANTASTIC! We love getting these resources into your hands! Our Phase Books are of particular interest to many families. Because of this high demand, we have purchased additional copies of each Phase Book, covering every phase from Newborn Baby to 12th Grade.
Stop by our Family Resource Cart and see what the Phase Books have to say about the phase your child is currently in.
Once you have found the book you are interested in, simply fill out the card located inside the front cover and drop it in the wood box on the Family Resource Cart. When you are finished, bring the book back & put the card back inside the front cover!
Can't find the information you are looking for? Let us know.
We will see if we can help find that resource for you.
Our Family Resource Cart can be found on the courtyard patio on Wednesday and Sunday mornings and in the Narthex (lobby) of the Church on all other days.
