SEPTEMBER 6, 2023 - NEWSLETTER
Yesterday, we welcomed our 9th grade students to their high school experience and new students in grades 10-12. I feel honored to work in a school district where we commit a day to supporting students who are transitioning to the high school. More than 120 11th and 12th grade Panther Mentors welcomed their peers and provided support and guidance to navigate the building before the hallways filled with the entire student body. It was a great day!
Today, we welcomed all students to the building. It was great to engage with so many awesome young adults. Even as connectivity issues with our student information system (Infinite Campus) interrupted some scheduling work, it was a solid start. We will continue to work with students to clean up course schedules throughout the week and appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.
Next week, join us for our Fall Curriculum Night - Wednesday, September 13, 5-7 p.m. I encourage all families to come, meet teachers and learn more about the curriculum your student will engage with and the learning experiences our teachers have planned for them. While you can access much of this information in Schoology, this event is designed to be more conversational and give you a greater understanding of the course content and experiences. I hope to see you here next Wednesday!
Please see today’s Need to Know section for valuable start of the school year information – including cell phones in the learning environment and restrictions of outside food deliveries during the school day. Thanks for your support on these topics.
Finally, as many of you have seen reported in the news, over the weekend, we lost a graduate from the Class 2023, Kyree Shaw, in a tragic drowning incident in Wisconsin. Kyree was an involved and impactful student and athlete throughout his time at SLPHS. He had begun classes and playing football at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in August and our thoughts and prayers are with his family they navigate this devastating loss. We have additional supports in the building all week to support students and staff who may be impacted by this or other loss.
I am grateful we are back together as we start the school year and able to support each other in any way we can as a community.
One School, one community, #SLPPantherProud!
Complete your review of student behavior and attendance expectations
Each year, we ask students and families to review student behavior and attendance expectations. After reviewing together, we ask families to acknowledge they have done so. This process helps set the tone for students as they begin the year and clarifies for students how we all expect them to conduct themselves each day at school.
Please take five minutes to log into Campus Parent Portal and review these expectations with your student.
- Log in to Campus with your district username and password.
- Select your student in the upper right corner.
- On the main menu click on DOCUMENT.
- Locate the Parent Documents section.
- Click on the 2023-2024 Behavior and Attendance Agreement.
- Review the document with your student.
- Sign and submit.
- Repeat these steps if you have more than one student in the district.
You can also expect to receive a message directly from Campus reminding you to review and sign this document. Please review at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions about these expectations, reach out to your school principal.
New way to report absences in Campus
If your student must be absent, please call the attendance line at 763-600-5109, or new this year, you can report a student absence through Campus Parent Portal:
- Log in to Campus Parent Portal
- On the main menu (on the left), click on MORE
- Click on ABSENT REQUEST
- Check the box by your student’s name.
- Complete the form.
- Select the Absent Type and Start Date and End Date and the number of days your student will be absent.
- Enter Comments to inform the school office of any details. This is a required step.
- Click SUBMIT
If a student is absent and we don't hear from a parent or guardian, we will be reaching out to check in.
No DoorDash, outside food deliveries, during the school day
We are aligning our practices with many surrounding schools and restricting DoorDash and other food deliveries at the high school during the school day. Any outside food deliveries made during the school day will be held in the office until the end of the day. The increase in outside food deliveries creates additional work for our very hard-working office staff, negatively impacts our physical environment, and too often puts our safety and security protocols at risk.
As a reminder, all guests and students must enter through the main office during the school day, where they can be verified and granted access to our building. Deliveries made to locked doors during the school day are not permitted and violations of this protocol will have consequences. Thank you for helping reinforce this with your student. We appreciate your support in helping us create a clean, welcoming and safe environment.
Cell Phones in the Learning Environment
Cell phones and other personal electronic devices brought to school need to be put away during instructional time unless the teacher has given explicit permission that the item can be used. Any item causing a disruption may be taken away at the teacher’s (or other staff member’s) discretion to be returned at a later time. With repeated offenses, students will be subject to school disciplinary action.
Families should be aware that schools are not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items – no matter how expensive. Students who choose to bring these to school do so at their own risk.

First day smiles
The 2023-2024 school year has begun for students at Spring Lake Park Schools. By the look of these faces, it's going to be an INCREDIBLE and #SLPPantherProud year! Seeing new and familiar students and staff back in school buildings always brings such excitement to the first day of school.
Live on 65: 7,000 Miles to Broadway
Road trips in the yellow station wagon with the car radio blasting the tunes of the time have become the soundtrack to J. Robert Spencer’s life. His entertaining biographical show, “7,000 Miles to Broadway,” kicks off the new season of the Live on 65 performance series Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 7 p.m. in the Spring Lake Park High School Fine Arts Center.
Thanks to continued generous sponsorship from the Spring Lake Park Lion's Club, tickets are priced for the whole family to attend. Purchase tickets online or day-off at the box office.
We recently caught up with J. Robert Spencer at his home in Oregon to learn more about the show, his background in theater, television, film and voice work and what audiences can expect to experience at “7,000 Miles of Broadway.” Learn more about the show.
