PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Greetings!


Information pertaining to end of year events, registration, and summer programs will be shared with you throughout April and May. Make sure that you regularly check your email, listen for phone messages, and visit our website (www.phillipsprep.com) for details. Stay safe and stay connected!

COMMITMENT FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2021-2022

All currently enrolled 6th and 7th grade students at Phillips will be automatically recommitted for the next school year, as long as they meet the magnet school eligibility guidelines.


Elective course selection options for current 6th and 7th graders will be emailed to parents at the beginning of April. We will do our best to accommodate your elective requests, but final decisions will be based on enrollment and teacher availability.

ONLINE REGISTRATION 2021-2022

Online registration begins April 12, 2021. Click the tab above to access the online registration portal. Click "RETURNING STUDENTS" if your child has attended school in MCPSS. Click "NEW STUDENTS" if your child has NEVER been enrolled in MCPSS.

ALABAMA COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (ACAP)

The Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) Summative Assessment will continue for students after Spring Break and throughout the month of April. All grade levels will take assessments in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. Additionally, 6th and 8th graders will take an assessment in Science. The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) requires that each school have at least a 95% participation rate for each subject and grade level tested. No student, including remote learners, shall be excluded from participation in state assessments.

LEARNING LEADING AWARD WINNER

Eighth grader Katie Bendolph has been selected as Phillips Preparatory’s Learning Leading Award Winner! Katie actively cultivates personal connections with her teachers and peers. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and is involved in numerous community projects. Katie is an academically focused and socially conscious student. Congratulations Katie!

HUNTSVILLE SPACE ACADEMY

Hari Atmakuri (8th), Amie Conrey (8th), and Ally McPherson (8th) were selected to participate in the Space Academy at Huntsville during the week of May 23rd through May 28th. Daltrey LeGros (7th) was featured in a previous newsletter. The Space Academy allows trainees to “experience firsthand the future of space travel and train to solve technically challenging anomalies in order to complete their space mission.” Participants apply their engineering skills and engage in teambuilding activities. Congratulations STEM Pirates!

AL SCHOOL OF CYBER TECHNOLOGY AND ENGINEERING

Three Phillips Prep eighth graders have been accepted into the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering in Huntsville. Sophie Santa-Cruz, Zamorah Morton, and Amie Conrey will accept their offers to attend the Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering (ASCTE), the nation’s only high school focused on the integration of cyber technology and engineering into all academic disciplines. Their vision statement: "ASCTE envisions a team with common goals and mutual accountability for student achievement that will become a national model in collaboration with governmental agencies, industry, and higher education specializing in cyber engineering." ASCTE is a public, residential magnet high school serving students throughout the state of Alabama. Congratulations Pirates!

MOBILE MATH OLYMPIAD

Phillips students recently competed in the Mobile Math Olympiad. Farah Hujier tied for 1st place in the 7th grade category and Matthew Ngo won 1st place in the 8th grade category. Congratulations STEM Pirates!

GREENHOUSES AND ROVERS

Mrs. Castelin and Mrs. Prewitt observed as their 6th grade students assembled greenhouses and began planting to conduct scientific investigations. Students also designed and created replicas of the Mars Rover that they will test by applying various forces.

COMPUTER-GENERATED ANIMATION

At the end of 3rd Quarter, 7th and 8th grade art students learned about Traditional and Computer-Generated Animation as part of a Graphic Design Unit. They created animated GIFs by a process of hand drawing, tracing, and photographing each image, before uploading them to a GIF maker.

ARGUMENTATIVE ESSAYS

Ms. McCants’ ELA classes recently completed their argumentative essays for third quarter. Students had the opportunity to evaluate their classmates’ essays and identify students whose reasoning and evidence were sufficient in supporting their claims. Take a look at the sample essay below!

SCHOLAR'S BOWL TRYOUTS

Scholar’s Bowl tryouts will be held on Wednesday, April 21st from 2:30 until 4:30. Tryouts are for the upcoming school year and are open to current 6th and 7th graders. Sign up sheets will be placed on both Mrs. Vickers’s and Ms. Walton’s doors. Virtual students wishing to tryout should contact Mrs. Vickers: avickers1@mcpss.com

2021-2022 CHEERLEADING TRYOUTS

2021-2022 Cheerleader Tryouts will take place April 28-30, 2021 after school. If you plan on trying out, you must have a current physical exam from a doctor. Please complete the required documents at dragonflymax.com.

Extended Day

The Phillips Extended Day program (PED) is a service for our families who need care for their children after regular school hours. PED provides a safe and monitored environment for your child between the hours of 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. each day. **Social distancing guidelines will be followed and masks must be worn during Extended Day.** Review the document below for more details.
