D.A.R.E
It's that time of year....D.A.R.E.! Classes will begin next week and will continue for a total of 10 weeks. Once a week, for 60 minutes, the students will receive instruction on how to make wise and healthy choices. This includes dealing with peer pressure, drugs, and alcohol.
Your child will bring home a contract for you to sign, informing you of what content will be taking place during D.A.R.E.. Please sign this form and return it to school with your child.
Each D.A.R.E. class will include homework, which is due at the next D.A.R.E. class. We have added a D.A.R.E. section on our homework page to inform you of weekly homework. Here is a link to our D.A.R.E. schedule so students know when homework is due.
At the end of the ten weeks of D.A.R.E., each student will need to write a one page essay explaining what they learned and how it will effect their lives.
Please mark your calendars for our very special D.A.R.E. Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday, March 13th at 6:00 . We would like ALL students to attend, so please inform your sport coaches, music teachers, and other activity leaders that this day is very important and that your child needs to attends their D.A.R.E. graduation. Thank you for honoring this request and making the necessary arrangements ahead of time. It is greatly appreciated.

Math
Students took time this week meeting with me to go over their first quiz, multiplying fractions and mixed numbers. An area that all students need to practice is converting mixed numbers into improper fractions before they multiply. We will continue to review this concept throughout the unit.
In addition, we began to investigating how to divide whole numbers and unit fractions. At first this concept seemed like a piece of cake (or waffle:) ) but students soon realized when putting equations into context, it can be a bit more difficult. Next week students will be writing their own word problems for their division equations.
At the end of this unit, students will be using their knowledge of multiplying fractions to alter the serving size of a Chex® Mix recipe. This is a great way for them to apply their understanding of multiplying fractions to the real-world. In addition, if you would like to donate any ingredients, that would be greatly appreciated.
Please take a look at the recipe that students will be making in class to see if there are any allergy concerns you might have for your child. Also, if there is a substitute I could use, please let me know. I would like every child to participate in this activity. Thank you to parents who have already contacted me in regards to any allergies that your child might have concerning this recipe.
Social Studies
Next week students will participate in an town meeting simulation. Students will be assigned a specific class in society and be required to research their position and stance on a specific topic. To prepare for this, students will complete the following task on Canvas.
