Academics
Math- This week we will work on estimating, subtracting larger numbers and two step word problems. Hopefully you noticed the Quick Quiz that came home last week. Several students were still struggling with rounding, so I spent time re-teaching it and I also gave those students some extra practice with it. I am trying to show students that the way to move from a "2" (developing) on something to a "3" (proficient progress) is to spend more time on it and practice a bit more.
Writing - We will concentrate on generating ideas for our Realistic Fiction pieces this week. We will also work on developing our characters and plot lines.
Science - Last week we set up our terrariums and aquariums. Right now we have snails and mosquito fish living in our aquariums, along with duckweed, elodea, and algae. Our terrariums have mustard seeds, grass seeds, and alfalfa seeds in them, and they are beginning to germinate. (We will add crickets and isopods to the terrariums as soon as they are delivered!) This week we will learn more about the living organisms in the aquariums, and make and record observations in our science lab book
Social Studies - This week we will be learning about the Geographical themes of movement (how people/goods move from one place to another) and regions (what are some of the regions in Michigan, what makes a region). The students will also be assessed on the 5 themes of geography either late this week or early next week. I will send home their notebooks before the quiz so they can review their notes.
Reading- Our focus for this week will be on making a movie in our mind to keep track of what is happening in our text. We will also continue to discuss good reading habits that we will strive for this year.
Teacher Notes
Words Their Way
Words Their Way (spelling/word study) will begin this week. Students have been assessed and placed into spelling groups. Spelling groups will meet on Wednesdays. Your child may have Mrs. Wofford or Ms. Fulks as their Words Their Way teacher this year. We have decided to test the students every other week, instead of weekly. This will allow us more time to instruct and work with students on their sorts. Therefore, the first Words Their test will be October 7th.
NightHawk Super Run
Last week you should have received information about the PTA's Fun Run fundraiser. Our goal as a school is to raise $18,000! Please visit the following website to set up your child's account:
