100 Years before Rosa Parks, there was Elizabeth Jennings Graham....
In 1854, a woman named Elizabeth Jennings Graham refused to leave a segregated streetcar, and was forcefully removed. Her father sued (future president Chester A. Arthur as lawyer), she won, and was awarded money and those streetcars were desegregated.
Read more about Elizabeth Jennings' story here.
9 months before Rosa Parks, there was Claudette Colvin....
Few people know the story of Claudette Colvin: When she was 15, she refused to move to the back of the bus and give up her seat to a white person — nine months before Rosa Parks did the very same thing. Read more about Claudette Colvin's story here.

TITLE IX ASSEMBLY
How to report discrimination:
Our school community is committed to providing a safe educational environment where all members of our community are treated with respect. As we continue to work on creating more inclusive spaces of belonging, we want to make sure our students and families know about and have access to the BVSD discrimination reporting form. The form can also be accessed under the "Help for Students" tab located at the top banner on every BVSD webpage. Completed forms are submitted directly to the District's Equity Compliance Officer who then connects with the reporting party and works to make sure appropriate next steps are taken.
If you have any questions about the form or making a report, please contact Elizabeth Francis, Equity Counsel/Title IX Coordinator, Boulder Valley School District at 720.561.8091 or elizabeth.francis@bvsd.org.

Last September I attended a work-based learning conference in Denver, and one afternoon the surprise keynote speaker was Governor Polis. He wore sneakers with his suit and sat with his little dog on his lap. He spoke about the importance of supporting work-based learning in Colorado and of the work he’d done advancing legislation on things like making it easier for out-of-state transplants to transfer their professional licenses so they can get to work quickly. He shifted, mid-speech, to concurrent enrollment, and spoke at length about his strong support of giving teenagers the chance to earn free college credits while in high school. Having never worked at a school that had concurrent enrollment, I didn’t realize how prolific concurrent enrollment is in our state, nor had I any idea that our governor was such an avid, profusive fan. And just the other day I found out that he’s declared this week Concurrent Enrollment Week in Colorado. How cool is that?!
A few fun facts from the Colorado Department of Education’s Annual Report on Dual and Concurrent Enrollment reflecting data from the 2019-2020 school year (CDE hasn’t published a more recent report):
In ‘19-’20, 98% of CO school districts and 91% of CO high schools offered concurrent enrollment programs.
Nearly 40% of all high school graduates of CO public schools participated in either dual or concurrent enrollment programs in ‘19-’20.
340,181 credit hours were attempted by CO students in ‘19-’20.
Of the attempted credit hours, 98% of those hours were, in fact, passed/earned.
77% of CO concurrent enrollment students went on to college compared to 52% of students who did not participate.
Happy Concurrent Enrollment Week in Colorado, everyone!
Please let me know how I can help you.
