Introduction
Have you ever seen colorful lights dancing on the sky. They are called northern lights or Aurora Lights. They can be green, blue, purple…. When people see the Aurora [Northern Lights] you might think it's very close but it is 60 miles above Earth.
What Causes Northern Lights?
The Sun acts like a giant power plant the energy is made deep inside the sun. The temperature is over 14 million degrees. The pressure is so big that hydrogen atom is squeezed into heelia. To explain this process, plasma escapes from Sun and it first hits Mercury, next it hits Venus, after that it gets to Earth but it does not hit Earth. Because the Earth has its own magnetic field the Earth deflects. It goes into the Earth's atmosphere.
Legends Of The Aurora Lights
The Cree believed it was the dance of the spirit. Finland people said they were caused by the fire fox running so fast across the snow that his tail sent sparks into the sky. In addition, Ancient Chinese believed they were the flames of god and evil dragon fighting in the heavens. Aurora was called after the Roman goddess from the dawn.
How colors are caused?
Aurora can be lots of different colors. The most common color is green. Different colors are caused by different gasses. You can see yellow auroras.
