National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week – Celebrating the Unseen COVID-19 Warriors
By Karen Thompson, MD
Professor and Chair, Department of Pathology
JABSOM
This past week was National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, or Lab Week as it is commonly called. Medical laboratory professionals include medical technologists, laboratory assistants, cyto and histo technologists, pathologists’ assistants, and pathologists. We are behind-the-scenes medical professionals, but are playing an integral role in the fight against COVID-19. Laboratorians were intimately involved from the very beginning of the coronavirus crisis by setting up testing, acquiring appropriate instruments, ordering or preparing kits and swabs, staying on top of new developments in testing and plasma therapy, and all of the challenges that go along with these affairs. In the midst of this epidemic, we serve as liaisons with clinicians, nurses, researchers, administrators, and government officials in order to provide the best patient care possible. And of course, medical laboratory professionals analyze the COVID-19 tests and verify and report the results. These are important roles that we also serve during “normal” times in regards to countless other laboratory tests.
The theme of this year’s National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is The Fellowship of the Lab. This is very fitting, as laboratory professionals share a camaraderie in our love of what we do and in our direct contributions to patient care, even though behind the scenes. In a lecture that I give to medical students, I explain to them that the lab is not a “black box” where specimens disappear into the pneumatic tube system, and then results magically appear in the computer; rather, the lab is a vibrant, active place filled with energetic, highly skilled professionals whose expertise provides precise and accurate lab results critical in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Normally, Lab Week is a celebratory time that includes fun and crazy games, prizes, lots of food, and sometimes pins, jackets, or other Lab Week paraphernalia. This year, the observance was more subdued, and some labs have postponed the official celebration due to COVID-19. We look forward to a time when we can celebrate in full, but until then, we will continue our fight as the unseen COVID-19 warriors.
Relieve stress during COVID-19. Be kind to yourself.
