Shreya Bandopadhyay
What is a Backstroke?
It is a swimming stroke that is performed while lying on the back with the arms lifted alternately out of the water in a backward circular motion with the legs kicking.
Ultimate Goal
The ultimate goal of this project is to determine whether women's times can ever be the same as or beat men's times in the event of a 100m Backstroke.
The procedure followed was:
- Data from the years 1976-2012 for men's and women's times were entered into a calculator.
- A graph showing the times for both genders was created.
- Two lines of best fit were created from both these pieces of information.
- The intersection of these two lines were found.
The Separate Plots
The Pink X's represent the times of the women.
The Blue Squares represent the times of the men.
The Lines of Best Fit
The two lines show the most common trend in each of the gender's times.
The red line shows the line of best fit for the women.
The blue line shows the line of best fit for the men.
The Intersection
The intersection of the two points shows that women will never overtake the men and men will always be the superior competitors in the category of the 100 Meter Backstroke. The X-Coordinate is in the past (1680) which means that the women would have overtaken the men 350 years ago and that means that they will never beat the men.
The X-Coordinate
The X-Coordinate signifies the year that women's and men's times would have coincided.
The Y-Coordinate
The Y-Coordinate signifies the time that men and women would have coincided at.
