OECHS Class Updates
English
English I Honors: This week, students finished up their study of Steinbeck's novella, Of Mice and Men. Next week, we will continue our study of short fiction with the works of Richard Connell and Washington Iriving. We will discuss the structure of short works, as well as identifying unversial themes and types of conflicts. Students will bring their topic proposals and documented sources on Monday, and will have their peer review for their final essay, a documented source paper which is due on Friday, November 22.
English IV Honors: Students are continuing to work through an in depth understanding of the basic story and themes in the novel Frankenstein. Students will explore the major themes of the story and make connections between the story of Frankenstein and their knowledge of its historical context and/or the modern world via their own lives. Students will become familiar with the basic components of a Gothic-Romance novel: Intuition, emotion, and imagination, obsession and madness; science that goes too far can produce something grotesque, horrific, and/or destructive; natural settings are isolated, severe, and/or spooky, “nature” is extended to the supernatural and includes demons, omens, curses, and the passionate hero/anti-hero is often driven to madness. This week students focused specifically on archetypes and characterization. In addition to making connections between the novel and the life of Mary Shelley.
Graduation Project: Five students chose to complete the graduation project and will be working independently and during seminar time. Student presentations will be December 5, 2019.
Math
Honors Math 2: Last week students had a test on Units 4-6 and an optional assignment to help them prepare for that test. A typical overall grade in both classes is a 92! Next week we will wrap up geometry topics by discussing similarity and trigonometry. There will be several online assignments on IXL and deltamath. And the week will end with a quiz on Friday.
Honors Math 4: This week we will be finishing up Unit 6 and completing the Trig portion of the course (I know that makes the students soooo sad). Monday we will cover the Double-Angle Identities, Tuesday will be the Unit Review, and Wednesday will be the Unit Test. After the test the rest of the week will be devoted to working with Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences and Series.
Social Studies
Civics and Economics: We are almost done with our study on the Judicial Branch of the government. This week we have looked at the Federal Court System and have spent time looking at the Supreme Court. Next Thursday we will have our test on the Judicial Branch and then begin our final unit for this semester, which is The U.S. Economy and Personal Finance.
AP WH: We had our first combined A/B Day test on Friday and it went well. We are moving on with our study by looking at the Mongols, Vikings, and the Black Death at the beginning of the week, and ending our week by studying the Empires in Sub-Saharan Africa and South East Asia.
American History I Honors: We have completed Unit V on Manifest Destiny and are examining the events leading up to the civil war. We will combine this unit with the civil war unit and test both next Friday, November 22. Students should check Teams for resource materials and timelines.
