Heights Happenings
Winston Heights PS - Term 2, Week 2 2022
Principal's Message
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you have had a refreshing break! What a busy start to the term it has been with our Commemorative Service to honour the Anzacs, the commencement of the DanceFever Sport Program (K-6), our school’s participation in a range of PSSA Sports each Friday, as well as a strong WHPS team representing the school at the Zone Cross Country on Monday. I would also like to thank the P&C for their organisation and running of the Mother’s Day Stall yesterday. It was great to see our students purchasing special gifts to share with their loved ones this weekend.
Earlier this week a communication was sent home to advise that I will continue to relieve in the role of Principal during Term 2. Mrs Bullock is currently recovering from a medical condition and will be making a gradual return. She is excited to reengage with the school community, however in order to maintain consistency, in my role as Relieving Principal I will remain the point of contact for students, staff and families.
NAPLAN
This year, students in Year 3 and 5 will participate in NAPLAN between May 9-20. All students at Winston Heights PS will complete this assessment online in 2022. As children progress through their school years, it is very important that checks are made along the way to see how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and mathematics – skills that will set them upon the path to success as adults.
This year, all students will complete the writing assessment on Tuesday 10 May. Other assessments will be completed during Week 3 – 4 for both Year 3 and Year 5 students.
NAPLAN is a point-in-time assessment that allows parents to see how their child is progressing in literacy and numeracy against the national standard and compared with their peers throughout Australia. At the classroom level, NAPLAN provides additional information to support teachers’ professional judgement about student progress.
Further information regarding the assessments can be found on the flyer or link below.
Commemorative Services for Anzac Day
On the first day back of Term 2 our students attended an assembly to demonstrate their gratitude and respect for the brave men and women of the Australian armed forces. This service was coordinated by Ms Gail Adams. Thank you to our school leaders who ran the assembly and to all those who contributed to make our Commemorative Service a respectful tribute.
On 25 April 2022, our school captains Kiki and Archie joined Mrs Rogers at the Castle Hill & District RSL sub-Branch Anzac Day Dawn Service. This was held at Centenary of ANZAC Reserve, Castle Hill. Despite the cold start to the day and the threat of rain our captains were extremely respectful throughout the service and honoured the Anzacs by laying a wreath at the foot of the cenotaph. Thank you to the School Captains for their attendance.
Staffing
It is with much sadness I inform you that Mr Greg Leeson will be leaving Winston Heights Public School as he has been successful in obtaining a position as an Itinerant Support Teacher - Hearing. His final day at school will be Friday 6 May 2022. I would like to thank him for his service at Winston Heights P.S and wish him every success in his new role.
It is with pleasure that I can inform you that 5/6L will be taught by Miss Kathryn Amargianitakis for the remainder of the year. Miss Amargianitakis has previously taught Stage 3 and is well known by the students having been a valued member of the WHPS staff teaching and teaching across a number of grades.
Please take the time to welcome Miss Amargianitakis to Stage 3 when you have the opportunity.
Winter Uniform
As Term 2 commences we begin to notice the cooler weather. Can I please encourage all families to stock up on school winter uniforms items, including jackets. Remember to include your child’s name on all items. All students are expected to be in full WINTER UNIFORM from the commencement of Term 2. At Winston Heights PS we hold high expectations with uniform standards and I thank the community in advance for their support.
Cross Country
In the last week of Term 1, Mrs Bryant and the Stage 2 teachers organised and ran the WHPS Cross Country event. The weather on the day was beautiful! Congratulations to all our students who participated.
