Principal's message - week 15
Greetings North Plains Families!
So the HSD bond passed, wow! This means North Plains will be getting a brand new elementary school, and our existing site will get some much needed upgrades including a new gym! Thank you all for taking the time to vote in this election!
It was great to see so many of you at conferences the last two days! It is so important to be involved in your child's education and I appreciate that this school community really embraces that. Check out the following link to some more tips to help your child be successful in school! http://tinyurl.com/HomeAndSchoolConnectionNov2017
Along the same lines, state testing will be coming up before we know it, and there are always questions around what happens and why. The following link will take you to a document that will explain more about what Smarter Balance is important and what it is. I am more than happy to talk more with you about it if you have questions. http://tinyurl.com/HSD2018ORStateTestingInfoNov17
I know that after school activities and sports are important for so many of our families, and NP parent Kevin Zuecher is a huge supporter of these activities! Here is a note from Kevin about the upcoming basketball season:
“Remember, registration closes for Hillsboro Youth Basketball on November 13th. The program does take registrations after the deadline, but it is first-come, first-served at that point. Over 20 kids have signed up in 3rd-6th grades from North Plains so far! We hope to have enough kids participating that all practices can take place at North Plains Elementary School. If you have any questions, please contact Kevin Zuercher at kevin.zuercher@hillsboro-oregon.gov
Winter is coming and it's likely to be another really cold one! If you know of someone or a family that may be homeless and in need of support, please see the following link for homeless shelters in WA county! http://www.co.washington.or.us/Homeless
Speaking of people in need, please read the following message from Ms. Clayton, our school counselor:
NPES is once again teaming up with Hillsboro Elks Lodge 1862 for their annual Holiday Food Drive. Students and families are encouraged to bring in non-perishable foods and/or canned food to help fill our barrels. We will be collecting food from November 7-December 7. The class with who brings in the most food will earn a class Popsicle party!

And now for the big news.... we have a new teacher! Ms. Keri Imada will teach 2nd grade for us which will make our 1st and 2nd grade classes about 24 students each, down from as high as 33! Keri is an OSU graduate, and is originally from the Island of Oahu. She and her family currently reside in Forest Grove and she is thrilled to be joining our North Plains family! This week, all of the students moving into her class will have the opportunity to meet her and spend a little time with her as she prepares her classroom for the transition on Nov. 20. Students from Ms. Smith's class that will be joining Ms. Gale for 1st grade will have the same opportunity to meet their new teacher. There will be an after school time for parents to come in and meet Ms. Imada or Ms. Gale if your child is moving classes. Thank you all so much for your support as we make this wonderful transition!
Reminders:
Spirit and Pride tee-shirt orders are in and should be back soon. If you are still interested in getting a tee-shirt, you will need to order online by Nov. 14. The link to order is http://www.spiritandpride.com and our school ID is 185486.
Remember, Oregon Battle of the Books is starting soon and all kids are welcome to participate in grades 3-6. Contact Renee Ramey at mailto:only2be@gmail.com for more info.
Have a great weekend long weekend, and remember to say, "thank you for your service" to a military veteran!
