February Newsletter
February 3, 2017
Please Read our monthly newsletter in it's entirety
From the Desk of the Principal
Greetings,
It is hard to believe that it’s already February! Please remind your child(ren) that the focus at school everyday is “Teaching and Learning”. We are excited about the growth that we are seeing in students and we really appreciate your support as we continue to strive for excellence in all areas.
As we collaborate as a professional learning community, we will continue to use data to make instructional decisions that support the learning and growth of all students. Please support our goals and efforts by attending our next PTO/SIC meeting on Thursday, February 16, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. It is imperative that we have input from parents, grandparents and guardians.
I also encourage you to attend our Math Day on Feb. 16th at 8:00 a.m. Math Day is the opportunity for parents/guardians to observe math instruction in the classroom and ask follow-up questions after the observation. This will give you a great insight into how math is being taught in 2017 as well as strategies and vocabulary that will help you support your child(ren) at home. If you have questions, please feel free to call me or Mrs. Ramet at 803-981-1910.
I hope that you enjoy what’s left of winter and the 4 day weekend that’s coming up (as long as we don’t have any days that have to be made up).
Children First,
Seberina Myles, Ed. S.

Erin's Law
Mandated Reporters
All school staff are mandated reporters. This means that staff members are required by law to report any and all reasonable suspicions of child abuse or neglect. Please remember when reports are made that staff members are not making accusations. Staff members are simply requesting for a professional service to be done. As mandated reporters, our obligation is to the child first. At Lesslie, we will always put children first. This is not new but just a reminder of the obligation that employees of Lesslie and Rock Hill School District 3 must adhere to.
Reporting and Dismissal Procedures
School Times: School starts at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 2:25 p.m. Students may be dropped off between 7:05 a.m. – 7:25 a.m. without delay. There is no supervision for students prior to 7:05 A.M. Students may not be signed out after 2:00 p.m. Please make appointments after 2:30 p.m. If students have a doctor’s appointment, verification of the appointment must be brought in to the office. Please remain in cars and do not line up for pick up before 1:30 p.m. Traffic in the circle may impede emergency vehicles if they have to respond to our school.
Tardies: Students will be dismissed to their classroom each morning at 7:35 a.m. Students who report to school after 7:45 a.m. must be signed in by an adult in the office. Please do not drop your child off without signing him/her in. Please read the district attendance policy on page 16 in the staff/student handbook.
PBIS
PBIS - Positive Behavior Intervention System
The purpose of Positive Behavior Intervention Systems is to create a positive school climate and develop more effective strategies for working with challenging behavior. This is achieved through school-wide behavior support planning, professional development on best behavioral practices, supporting teachers to master strategies and developing systems of intervention for small groups of students and for specific students.
PBIS is a nationally recognized research-based best practice designated by the Office of Special Education Programs as one of the “Ideas that Work.” Schools that implement PBIS with fidelity over time demonstrate the following outcomes:
- Improved school climate
- Reductions in office discipline referrals and in-school and out of school suspensions
- Increased parent and community satisfaction
- Improved systems for responding to students in need of additional support with social behavior
At Lesslie our students are going for the G.O.L.D:
G- Grow It
O - Own It
L - Lead It
D - Dream It
PTO Updates
The Hornet Tree - The Hornet Tree is an opportunity for parents, grandparents, guardians, business partners and community members to support the efforts at Lesslie Elementary School. The tree will be located in front of the stairs at the main entrance. It will be a tree with a hornet’s nest. Donators will have a hornet with their name, student’s name, or teacher’s name. There will be 3 levels of donations. Bronze-Those who donate at least $25.00 Silver- Those who donate at least $50.00 Gold- Those who donate at least $100.00 Families can advance levels as they make additional donations. For example: Student X parents donated $25.00 in January and received a bronze hornet. In March they donated $25.00. They will then earn a Silver hornet.

1 Thing – Teaching and Learning is the focus at Lesslie everyday. Please support this learning by asking your child to share 1 thing that he or she has learned each day. Please don’t accept “nothing” or “I don’t remember.” Learning spirals and builds upon previous learning so it is very important that your child retains information from day to day, week to week, month to month and year to year.
From the School Nurse:
We need 150 minutes of moderate exercise OR 75 minutes of vigorous exercise every week for adults, 45-60 minutes a day for children.
Choose healthy food options, avoid fried foods, limit processed sugars and drink lots of water.
Avoid use of tobacco products.
Fun Facts:
Laughing is good for the heart!
Your heart pumps 2,000 gallons of blood per day.
There are over 60,000 miles of blood vessels in our bodies.
The heart works twice as hard as the leg muscles of a sprinter!
Update From PE:
February is National Heart Month and 2-5th graders here at Lesslie will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart and raising money for the American Heart Association! Our school goal this year is $2,000. Permission slips have already gone home. All students will be working on jump rope skills this month during P.E. class.
