The Mustang Minute
June 15, 2020 - Issue 41
THANK YOU!
One Week (and a 1/2 day) !
We are very excited to have arrived, at long last, at our final week of remote learning. And we could not have done any of it without all of you. Every year, our goal at CMS is work in partnership with parents to help educate your children. The pandemic has truly tested our ability to do that effectively. None of the accomplishments attained, none of the learning acquired, none of the development could have happened without our parent-teachers in the trenches pushing and pulling us all along. You have been our steady partners through this crisis, supporting us at home as we tried desperately to connect from afar. So thank you, thank you so much for all of your help! My dear hope is that we will not need as much help next fall, but it is reassuring to know we have strong partners in place to help us as we move forward.
Reminders
Book Drop Off: Students may drop off any remaining text books when they come for the promotion parade of last day of school parade. If you are not able to attend either event you can drop off books any day during the summer between 9 - 1 though you may want to call prior to coming. Chromebooks should be kept for the summer to help facilitate summer reading and the summer enrichment activities we will be sending out and posting next week.
June 22nd Celebration
For our last half day of school we have two activities planned - one online and one voluntary "in-person". All students will have a final Google meet of the year at 1:00 pm on June 22nd. Teachers and students will reflect on the year, play games, and watch a few videos made by the teachers.
Families also have the option to do a drive through goodbye from 10:00 - 11:30 am at CMS. Students and families can drive, bike, and skateboard through our driveway and teachers will be there to wave, cheer, and say goodbye. This is voluntary and we ask that it be a moving goodbye.
Electives
Please have your 6th and 7th grade students fill out their 2020-2021 elective form. We are missing about 1/3 of all students. If they don't choose - we have too! They received the form in their email from Mr. Greeley last week.
Student Locker Pick-up. At the end of the school year we will be donating all items left from locker clean-out. We have several bags left, labeled by student. Please contact us if you would like to come and pick up your student's belongings.
Virtual Field Trip week
We are hoping to end the year with some virtual exploration for kids to enjoy. During this week students will receive links to two virtual field trips per day. One trip has been designed by a team teacher and one by a specialists. Students are expected to participated in all field trips they receive, even if they are not currently in that specialist class. There will be no assignments or written work with the field trips but each day students will also have two scheduled meets. We do consider these field trips and meets to be required - the same as we would if we were in school.
Grade 8 will be doing all DC field trips during this same week. We have left Thursday, June 18th blank for their promotion ceremony. The grade 6 & 7 meets will be earlier that day so that all teachers can attend the promotion car parade at CMS. The schedules are posted below.
Grade 8 End of Year
We will have two events for grade 8 students this spring:
June 17th at 7:00pm we will hold a virtual awards and promotion ceremony. This will be broadcast on NCM. NCM also has streaming access on several sites. A small group of teachers will read the names of student award winners and all grade 8 students being promoted.
June 18th from 3:00-5:00 pm we will have a "reverse" parade for grade 8 students. Students will be driven down the front lane at CMS and receive a swag bag, promotion certificate and awards. We are working with the Norwood police to make sure this is safe and organized. We sent out details last week and I have attached the flier to this newsletter, scroll to the bottom to find it.
Virtual Field trip Schedule: June 15-19th
An All New PTO!
This year we will be losing all of our PTO officers. Instead of trying to find a few individuals to take over those roles, we are going to look at restructuring the PTO to make it more accessible to parents while spreading out the workload across more CMS school community members. If you would like to be a part of this process, let me know! Email me at mfraczek@norwood.k12.ma.us
I plan to have a restructuring meeting early in the summer.
Bus Pass 2020-2021
We have updated all information regarding the FY21 Bus Pass on the school website, however, this year due to the closure, we are unable to physically hand students the flyers. In order to assist families the information and forms are now available on the NPS website. The bus forms are attached at the bottom of this newsletter as well.

Norwood United
Feeling at Home in Norwood
Norwood United is embarking on a journey of learning and love. Many Norwood residents feel Norwood is their home, both physically and spiritually but we must recognize that many of our Black, Latino, and immigrant residents feel like outsiders, even after many years in the community. Norwood United is dedicated to creating a safe and courageous space for conversation. As many of us discovered last Sunday, there are as many different stories in Norwood as there are residents. We welcome you to join us to listen, learn, and share so we can grow together as a community united.
