Big image

  • researched Washington, DC (first grade), individual topics (second grade), space and animals (third grade), states (fourth grade), Lewis & Clark, Civil War, and inventors (fifth grade)
  • participated in World Almanac for Kids game to hone their research skills (fourth grade)
  • created eBooks about planets using the Book Creator app (third grade)
  • learned about digital citizenship, focusing on internet safety, digital footprints, and ethical use of information (all students)
  • used our many online resources: World Book, Britannica Online, Discovery Education, EasyBib, Tumblebooks, Storia eBooks, BrainPop
  • began using Britannica Image Quest, a new resource for images

Promoting Reading

  • Students read, read, read. Circulation is sky high, partly because students now can check out as many books as they want, within reason.
  • Bluestem Award (3rd-5th) - Eighty students read at least four of the twenty books nominated for the Bluestem Award and were eligible to vote. Thirty students read the entire list! Wonder by R.J. Palacio received the most votes throughout the state.
  • Monarch Award (K-2nd) - Everyone in K-2 participated. The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School by Laura Murray garnered the most votes throughout the state.
  • Battle of the Books - Forty-five students participated. Elm's team came in second out of seven teams at the district meet for the second year in a row!
  • One School One Book - Elm School families read The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary. At school we asked questions about the book, and students with correct answers won a Beanie Baby, complete with a helmet made from a ping pong ball. For Fine Arts Night, families gathered in the library for lots of activities related to the book. Drawing Ralph following a video tutorial was especially popular.
  • Online Suggestion Box - Students recommended books to add to the Elm library. Many of these books are now in our library and are being checked out a lot.
  • Love Your Library - Families donated 113 new books on Valentine's Day. We so appreciate this generosity.

Partnering with Parents

PTO continued to be a great supporter of the Elm MRC by providing funding for these projects:
  • Author visit - Alice McGinty
  • One School One Book - gave a copy of The Mouse and the Motorcycle to every family
  • Generous donation for library books
Parents volunteered more than 400 hours in the MRC. We couldn't do all we do without parent volunteers! Here's what they did?:
  • Shelved thousands of books
  • Marked levels on guided reading books
  • Completed untold tasks to help teachers
  • Staffed the book fair with a smile
